    Girl gave teenager lethal drugs
A 16-year-old boy died after taking a cocktail of lethal drugs at a party, an inquest in Aberystwyth has heard. The court heard how a 12-year-old girl dished out her mother’s prescribed tablets to Michael Edwards in May 2004.

Recording a verdict of non-dependent abuse of drugs, Ceredigion Coroner Peter Brunton said Michael had died needlessly.

The teenager, from Llanon, Ceredigion, had taken drugs before but he was not an habitual user, Mr Brunton added.

The hearing in Aberystwyth on Tuesday heard how the 12-year-old girl – who is now 13 and who cannot be named for legal reasons – supplied morphine and diazepam to Michael at her parental home on 3 May last year.

In November last year, the girl was sentenced to a two-year supervision order at Swansea Crown Court after admitting supplying the drugs.

This was a young life cut short at 16 totally needlessly
    Ceredigion coroner Peter Brunton

Her mother, who suffers health problems and is on prescribed medication, was in intensive care in hospital at the time of the party after suffering serious injuries in a road accident.

Giving evidence, the girl said she had not intended to give Michael morphine. “I thought I was giving him Valium. I did not think I was giving him morphine,” she said.

“I knew the morphine was dangerous.”

She added: “I had no idea how dangerous the problems could be. I don’t remember much of that night, things were a bit blurry.”

She was admitted to Bronglais Hospital’s intensive care unit following the party along with friends who had taken the drugs as well.

Two of Michael’s other friends, who were also at the party, also gave evidence at the inquest. One, a male, said Michael had taken at least five to 10 tablets.

A female friend told how she had tried to wake Michael by throwing water over him the morning after the party. Hours later he was pronounced dead.

Dr Christopher Simpson, consultant pathologist at Aberystwyth’s Bronglais Hospital who carried out the post-mortem examination, said Michael had died from a combined overdose of morphine and diazepam.

The inquest also heard from Michael’s mother, Bethan, who said she had last seen her son on the evening he died.

    Totally needlessly

Michael, who attended a school for children with behavioural problems in Chepstow, had phoned her later that evening to ask if he could stay at a male friend’s house.

Mrs Edwards gave her permission, but later discovered Michael had lied and stayed at the 12-year-old girl’s home with other friends.

Summing up the evidence, Mr Brunton said: “Perhaps the most illuminating aspect brings home the seriousness of simply playing with drugs which are prescribed, which in the hands of those with no knowledge can be dangerous and lethal.

“This was a young life cut short at 16 totally needlessly.”

He added that Michael had taken a cocktail of drugs but two (morphine and diazepam) had effectively brought about his death.

Speaking after the inquest, Michael’s mother said she blamed all of the children for what had happened “a little bit.” But, she added, her son had been old enough to realise what he was doing.

    ymysgedd o gyffuriau’n lladd llanc

_40168895_michaeledwards203.jpg Bu farw llanc 16-oed ar ôl cymryd cymysgedd o gyffuriau mewn parti, clywodd cwest yn Aberystwyth.

Clywodd y llys sut y rhoddodd merch 12-oed dabledi presgripsiwn ei mam i Michael Edwards ym Mai 2004.

Wrth gofnodi rheithfarn o gam-drin cyffuriau heb ddibyniaeth, dywedodd Crwner Ceredigion, Peter Brunton, fod Michael wedi marw’n ddiangen.

Dyma fywyd ifanc wedi dod i ben yn 16 yn gwbwl ddiangen”
    Crwner Ceredigion, Peter Brunton

Roedd y llanc o Lanon wedi cymryd cyffuriau o’r blaen ond nid oedd yn ddefnyddiwr rheolaidd, meddai Mr Brunton.

Clywodd y gwrandawiad yn Aberystwyth ddydd Mawrth sut yr oedd y ferch 12-oed – sydd nawr yn 13 ac na ellir ei henwi am resymau cyfreithiol – wedi rhoi morffin a diazepam i Michael yn ei chartref ar Fai 3 y llynedd.

Yn Nhachwedd y llynedd dedfrydwyd y ferch i orchymyn goruchwylio dwy flynedd yn Llys y Goron Abertawe wedi iddi gyfaddef cyflenwi’r cyffuriau.

Roedd ei mam, sy’n dioddef problemau iechyd a sydd ar feddyginiaeth, yn yr uned gofal dwys yn yr ysbyty adeg y parti wedi iddi ddioddef anafiadau difrifol mewn damwain car.

    ‘Niwlog’

Wrth roi tystiolaeth dywedodd y ferch nad oedd wedi bwriadu rhoi morffin i Michael.

“Roeddwn i’n credu mod i’n rhoi Faliwm iddo.

Doeddwn i ddim yn credu fy mod yn rhoi morffin iddo,” meddai.

“Roeddwn i’n gwybod fod y morffin yn beryglus.”

“Doedd gen i ddim syniad pa mor beryglus y gallai’r problemau fod,” ychwanegodd.

“Dydw i ddim yn cofio llawer am y noson honno, roedd pethau’n eithaf niwlog.”

Aethpwyd â hi i uned gofal dwys Ysbyty Bronglais wedi’r parti yn ogystal â’i ffrindiau oedd wedi cymryd y cyffuriau hefyd.

Fe roddodd dau o ffrindiau eraill Michael, oedd hefyd yn y parti, dystiolaeth yn y cwest.

Dywedodd un ffrind gwrywaidd fod Michael wedi cymryd o leiaf bump i 10 tabled.

Dywedodd ffrind benywaidd sut yr oedd wedi ceisio deffro Michael drwy daflu dŵr drosto y bore ar ôl y parti.

Oriau’n ddiweddarach cyhoeddwyd ei fod yn farw.

Dywedodd Dr Christopher Simpson, patholegydd ymgynghorol yn Ysbyty Bronglais Aberystwyth, a wnaeth yr archwiliad post mortem fod Michael wedi marw o gyfuniad o orddos o forffin a diazepam.

Clywodd y cwest hefyd gan fam Michael, Bethan, a ddywedodd ei bod wedi gweld ei mab am y tro olaf y noson y bu farw.

    ‘Diangen’

Roedd Michael, oedd yn mynd i ysgol i blant gyda phroblemau ymddygiad yng Nghas-gwent, wedi ei ffonio y noson honno i ofyn a allai aros yn nhŷ ffrind gwrywaidd.

Rhoddodd Mrs Edwards ei chaniatâd, ond daeth i wybod yn ddiweddarach fod Michael wedi dweud celwydd ac wedi aros yn nghartref y ferch 12-oed gyda ffrindiau eraill.

Wrth grynhoi’r dystiolaeth dywedodd Mr Brunton: “Dyma fywyd ifanc wedi dod i ben yn 16 yn gwbwl ddiangen.”

Dywedodd fod Michael wedi cymryd cymysgedd o gyffuriau ond fod dau (morffin a diazepam) wedi achosi ei farwolaeth.

Wrth siarad wedi’r cwest dywedodd mam Michael ei fod yn beio’r holl blant “ychydig” am yr hyn ddigwyddodd.

Ond roedd ei mab, meddai, yn ddigon hen i sylweddoli’r hyn yr oedd yn ei wneud.

Yea I heard about this story . Crazy !

this is the first I’ve heard of this. As sad as the story is, notice the way the headline is written A 16-year-old boy died after taking a cocktail of lethal drugs at a party” emphasising the link between the link between the drugs and the party…at first glance one would expect a story about a recreational drug user collapsing after a bad E. Its not even that, as far as i can tell this story should really be used as a plea for wider drug education, as the current system covers the basics of illegal drug use but needs to be expanded to cover the increasing misuse of prescribed drugs and also for thus to be taught to children of a younger age. (kindof got distracted about 40times there and my point changed each time but it makes sense)

this is a very sad story of ignorance and death

when i was about 13 or 14 me and a few mates used to raid the hell out of a mate’s mums bag… she was a nurse of some kind and had all kinds of uppers downers and all arounders in there…

but we did so with the help of a detailed book called “know your prescription drugs” that not only described the possible side effects but actually gave a reasonable amount of detail about which parts of the brain (for example) would be effected.

in the version of the story i read it said that she hadn’t meant to give her friend morphine, thinking it was diazepam. AFAIK if someone is found dead, and an autopsy finds that they have taken more than 3 of the 20mg temazepan, the verdict is suicide! this is not a lot of pills for a teenage wobbler to take!

and why wasn’t he taking responsibility for his own intake? like “here take this”… my next question would be “what is it?”

it’s very sad that someone has to lose their life becuase they didn’t care what they were taknig… then again, how many people actually can say with any certainty what was in the pills / ez they’ve taken?

Morphine is clearly marked on several points of the container

    true – OTOH

IME NHS staff are some of the biggest caners in this nation (provided they do their work correctly and provide appropriate standards of care to all I have no problem whatsoever with that!)

until recently NHS were fairly lax about CNS (central nervous system) -active drugs [stimulants, hypnotics etc] and there was massive over-prescribing and diversion to the street markets. They’ve tightened up a bit but it still happens.

a book called the “British National Formulary” lists everything the NHS can prescribe, its effects and side-effects etc. it can often be found in reference libraries or can be purchased at the TSO bookshops along with all the other public sector manuals.

If you have internet access, all anyone needs to do nowadays is enter the generic or trademark name of any drug and you can get info in many languages.

sadly it looks like there was an element of bravado there. The 12-year old girl cannot really be expected to know what was in the containers, and many lads at 16 think they are indestructible

It also appears they all came from a socially deprived background, which would not have given them access to the info sources or the mindset to use them – a lad with “behavioural problems” is unlikely to visit a library where the BNF can be found (usually in the reference section) nor to be able to read a fine-print book crammed full with complicated spellings and medical jargon.

Even more reason why effective and robust drugs education, harm reduction info, and access to further info must be given at secondary schools (and perhaps even at late primary years nowadays), in spite of any bleating of parents or conservative-minded teaching staff.

    Better education could save lives…

u europeans dont know what real drugs are come to america and party with me.

that’s a lovely offer, but i’ll pass for now

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/southern_counties/4474401.stm

An American chemist found guilty of running a multi-million pound LSD factory has been jailed for 20 years.

Jailing him, Judge Anthony Niblett said one of the worst features was his decision to set up the factory in the UK because US drug laws were “too hot”.

Michael DID know what he was taking, but having seen this girls mother being stoned and chilled out all of the time, why would he think that this mixture would kill him? He just wanted to be high-NOT DIE! You were lucky enough, as a child to have your friends mother be a nurse and therefore have access to her BNF. He DID NOT try to take his own life, but even he did not realise how dangerous slow-release morphine was, and THAT is what killed him. You must know that slow-release is much more dangerous than ‘normal’ pills. He was waiting to feel a high, but because morphine slows the heart rate down, (to a stop in his case), he never got his high-he died.

Only ONE of the children came from ‘a socially deprived background’ as you decided to put it, and this was the girl who supplied the drugs in the first place. This was only because she was born to both parents who had suffered from drug abuse for many, many years, so she had grown up to believe that this was part of the NORM. You are right when you say that BRAVADO had a lot to do with the situation though, 16 year old boys are like that. Michael came from a broken family. His mother did all she could to put him and his 3 siblings on the right path. she found this very difficult as their father was a very heavy drinker and gave no thought to his children at all! The ‘behavioural problems’ that Michael had, disappeared after he had moved to the school in Chepstow and he was becoming a very likeable, charming young man. Because slow-release morphine does not give you an instant ‘high’, he DID become greedy and obviously took a lot more pills, not knowing that morphine content would kill him. Drug education in schools SHOULD be mandatory-this would then give knowledge and save lives.

wish morphine and diaz would get me mashed sadly it doesn’t..
