Home office official spokespeople have been telling the media today that they plan to make Ketamine a class C controlled substance by the end of the year…
There was a brief consultation period (I posted up the report here a few months back) but it was mainly to ensure this would not increase costs for vets (most vets are licensed to use class C and often class B substances such as the benzodiazepines (valium, lorazepam) anyway).
I would expect the govt will try and make an example of low-medium level dealers in this substance, and perhaps lean on the Indian authorities to tighten up export controls (remember India is still dependent on the UK for a lot of lucrative IT work, particularly public sector products)
personally though I think all this will do is drive people back towards pills and speed, and perhaps only result in more young people entering prison for the first time – rather counterproductive IMO..
i would of thought that they would of classed it higher than C, thinkin that they want to reinstate ganja back to class B and K is much worse than weed.
Unlike cannabis (which is only just finding its medical market), Ketamine already has many legitimate uses in both human and veterinary medicine – it is used every day in the NHS and for the treatment of small animals and horses throughout the UK (its not used for large animals that we eat, because of european rules about permissible drug residues in meat).
Its recreational use and illegal import does not actually cause that many social problems at the moment!
You do not get people squatting empty buildings and abstracting huge amounts of electricity (and creating unsafe installations) to make “ketamine factories”, and most of the health problems it causes are minor physical ones (mostly due to the particulates ingested whilst sniffing it) rather than serious long-term mental ones which cannabis can cause in some individuals.
IME most heavy ketamine users stop when the effects become too unpleasant….
I am not aware of any “ketamine turf wars” either (just as well or the moosers would shoot all the bystanders as they cannot see or aim straight!)
To make it class B would however vastly increase the burden for healthcare facilities for all species.
Doctors may find themselves with an extra administrative or security phase to obtain vital medicine (in the Emergency Department where seconds count)
Vets would have to deal with more paperwork and it would mean normal people pay even more when their dog, cat or pony requires treatment (and all pet owners know vets are far from cheap).
Increasing the burden on non-drug users alike would be seen as a “victory for the drug culture” by many; which would not do the Governments image any good.
Furthermore I can’t help but wonder if it is tolerated because unlike the other party stimulants it disrupts the logistics of organising events – making them essentially “self-limiting” and easy to stop…

its quite mad to see how your views on ket have changed upto now GL, same as me really i remember maybe a year or two ago me sticking up for ket to you saying how it wasnt that bad and how its okay if you take a bit at a party etc, and now i havent even touched it for over a year and have managed to get most of my mates to give it up or at least cut down severly. quite good really.

At the time this post turned up the long term damage to internal organs wasn’t known by anyone – although I think it depends a lot on region and other factors though. As well as a fair few K-heads I do also know a lot of people who did stop when they started feeling ill, and one good thing about mephedrone is people are starting to go back to stimulants and psychedelics which are the “proper” drugs on the party scene.
Although back then I used the stuff fairly regularly I never thought it was as “good” as other party drugs, indeed I mostly avoided it from 1999-2003 or so..
my 2005 comment did also contain a slight “conspiracy theory” about how it had destroyed some crews organisational skills, although what seemed to happen is it provided a “don’t give a fuck” attitude as well hence the rise in parties in crap locations
Also unlike any other party drug it does still have legitimate medical uses which still would makes it harder for the Government to make it class B or A, as it would increase the burden on both human and veterinary medical staff and they would need to spend more time doing paperwork and security procedures what could instead be used for treating patients..
Weighing it up i dont think ketamine shud be higher then a class C, It wud be good if more info was being given out to people about its dangers though.
going back some years to the first time i sniffed K i knew very little about it other than being told it was a ‘horse tranquilizer’! the intensity level of that 1st trip blew my mind.
And now, has all but totally disappeared. I’m sure there is still vast amounts in private hands (not vets/hospitals), but its like a true commodity now, much like gold/platinum.
People claim it’s in their area, but the reports seem to be from young people…. essentially K noobs, so they wouldn’t know what ket was anyway, probably one of those RC dissociatives sold as ket.
MXE most likely I reckon.
