  • A teenager has died in hospital, three days after taking illegal drugs police think were contaminated. Mark Brown, 18, from Killingworth, North Tyneside, was one of three people hospitalised after suffering adverse reactions in separate incidents.
A 27-year-old Newcastle woman remains in a critical condition. A third man aged 22 was released after treatment.
Northumbria Police believe tainted batches of cocaine, amphetamines and ecstasy may be on sale in the area.
A force spokeswoman said Mr Brown died in Newcastle General Hospital overnight.
She added: “Mark Brown’s family are naturally distraught at what has happened.
“A post-mortem examination is being carried out and forensic tests are ongoing to identify whether the drugs are from the same batch.”
Detectives described the separate incidents in Newcastle and North Tyneside as “highly unusual”.

    Woman’s death not drugs related

The death of a North Tyneside woman in hospital was not caused by drugs, according to police.

Kirsty Pattinson, 27, of Backworth, had been in Newcastle General Hospital for five days before she died.
Northumbria Police initially thought she died after suffering a bad reaction to drugs, but this explanation has now been ruled out.
A post-mortem examination showed she died of brain swelling, and her death is not being treated as suspicious.
Ms Pattinson, of Castle Square, had been in a critical condition at Newcastle General Hospital since 1 October and died last week.

    Contaminated drugs victim named

The second of two teenage boys who died after taking contaminated drugs in Hull has been named by police. Kieran Birch, 17, from Westbourne Street, died on 3 October. Jason Sawyer, 15, of Clarendon Street, who died two days later, was named earlier.
Police said they were believed to have taken drugs known as “subbies”, which were being distributed across the city.
A spokesman said Kieran’s family hoped his death would serve as a warning and urged people not to take the drugs.
The drugs are believed to be a form of opiate derived from a painkiller called Subatex.
The spokesman said: “Police believe the two teenagers’ deaths are closely linked and are very concerned that contaminated tablets are being distributed in the Spring Bank area of Hull and elsewhere in the city.
“Officers are urging people not to take these drugs. They should be disposed of immediately and not consumed.
