The annoying thing about this story is their main concern seems to be Hypoxia, lack of oxygen to the brain. The death they quote was unusual in that the guy had wired himself up to a whole cylinder with a mask, thus ensuring he could get no oxygen – a balloon is a different matter. Also this guy had bought it himself, not from a club or party….it could be argued that this death has simply demonstrated that its far safer to do whippets from a balloon in a club, than to buy a large bottle of nos for home use through a mask!!!!!!

    ………………………………….

Nightclubs, bars and festivals that sell nitrous oxide face prosecution as part of a purge on the recreational use of the chemical.
Drug regulators said yesterday that anyone supplying the compound, commonly known as laughing gas, for recreational inhalation was complicit in an activity that carried serious health risks and would be prosecuted.
The Medicines and Health-care products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said that the maximum penalty for supplying nitrous oxide in contravention of the Medicines Act was two years’ imprisonment or an unlimited fine.
Use of nitrous oxide has surged in popularity in recent years as a cheap, seemingly harmless and supposedly legal “high”.
However, while its use as a medical anaesthetic and in some food products, such as canisters of whipped cream, is permitted, only pharmacists are legally allowed to supply it in a gas form.
The crackdown by the MHRA follows the death of a 23-year-old company manager in Birmingham.
Although the gas is not toxic, excessive inhalation can cause hypoxia — a lack of oxygen in the brain — which led to the death of Daniel Watts, whose body was found at his home next to a large cylinder of nitrous oxide.

If you read the comments at the end of the article then apparently it was suicide, rather than any attempt to get high. :hopeless:

It was only a matter of time before this crackdown though – it’s everywhere at the moment, similar to what happened to mushrooms…

its been banned from at least one local venue here, probably because the cops and council started leaning heavily on the management….

I’ve seen reports elsewhere on this case which imply this blokes business wasn’t doing very well…

agreed – and I don’t think its really just because of this single incident.

What is happening is people are caning the stuff, falling over/passing out and/or smacking their heads and once again its ending with the overworked NHS Emergency Department staff having to pick up the pieces. The NHS (as you would expect) works very closely with the MHRA….

people seem to forget that if we didn’t keep hurting ourselves when playing, Nanny could actually just sit in the corner, drink her gin and leave us alone…

Yep, same thing happening around here – I heard that Southwark council were investigating the legal state … but as you say, it’s all about people being sensible. People have to look after themselves and each other, otherwise we give the powers-that-be no choice!

Do you reckon they’ll still be sold at free partys? I do love baloons but i would save me so much money if they weren’t there!

I expect they will be for a bit although I fear trails of carelessly discarded balloons will lead the feds to start searching for and confiscating canisters….

Presumably if you take your own, and dont supply any one else, theres nothing they can do……technically, but of course, you’d be hard pushed to argue it out in court….

I think this shit is pretty dangerous myself…. all my mates and myself take it in balloons but everyone breathes it in til they cant physically do it anymore cause you will pass out through lack of oxegen. I personally think that is absolutely stupid that ringing and stupidly wrecked feeling is some of the nitrous but is also lack of oxegen to the brain that really isn’t appealing to me. I take it but not to the extent where I can’t breathe anymore that is through common sense and a bad experience. Where I almost passed out and had such a high pitched ringing it was making feel really ill. As soon as opened the window and took one deep breath of fresh air it instantly went away and I felt okay in the space of about 5 seconds. Thats where I came to the conclusion thats it lack of oxegen that fucks you noooooooot goooood at all.

yeh the ringing sensation i think is the pressure building up and changing in your head.

i enjoy balloons for the hallucigenic properties, the most intense trip i had was off balloons, it was also the shortest of my life, lasting about 30 seconds. but the colours and the movement of people dancing at the free party just sent me into another psycadelic world and it was pretty magic!

    I. LOVE. NITROUS.

they are showing up less and less and are banned from sale from loads of ‘majour’ events…. depending on venue.. i found this out as i was thinking aobut starting my own stall to cater events.. gave up the idea as many places i asked replied that it wasnt allowed in their venues.

still quite good fun tho…. not the best thing ever…. i almost passed out over one baloon at transmission last year….. dont do em standing up lol….

    peace n love

I noticed it hasn’t been at my local club recently so i asked why… they said the legality of it is questionable so they are no longer selling it

cops only need to suspect that one drug in use on premises to be able to justify searching the venue (or punters) for others…

sorry mate theres ne thing but a lack of oxygen in n2o, doesnt the name give it away nitrous oxide, where were you in chemistry

remember fight club “why do they give you oxygen in plane crashes??? because oxygen gets you high!!”

Oxygen can be a poison if its at a high enough pressure – if you were a diver using 100% oxygen in your tanks the maximum safe depth you would dive to is about 6m!!

This is why dives below about 50m water depth require a special gas mix to be possible…
