In the case of Syd Barrett and similar I don’t really think it was a case of quantity – a lot of people around that time were taking far more lsd and came through it unharmed. Some people are pre-disposed to psychological illness/breakdowns – drugs can act as a catalyst (but then so can a number of other factors) – it’s almost certain Syd Barrett had schizophrenia, exacerbated by drugs.
