  • One of the worlds finest and nicest dope smugglers has inoperable cancer 🙁
    Poor fella.

    News here:

Howard Marks reveals he has inoperable cancer | UK news | The Guardian

To put thngs into perspective, this unfortunately is a common medical condition affliciting males of his age whether or not they have ever touched illegal drugs.

The smoking of cigarettes; leading a stressful life and exposure to harsh industrial chemicals can trigger these cancers and its around this age group the worst bits start happening. For a chap these days It does however seem better to make it to around 69/70 even if you go down from these nasties as after those ages your mind/body is going to start to give out anyway.

When I get to my later middle age (57 onwards) I plan to emigrate to NL or DE (probably around the border area) if I can find some way of supporting myself there without working full time; that way I can enjoy my later years (as it seems that the old chaps there can get away with all sorts stlll) and if/when too much of you gives out you can just hand yourself in to be put down and no one judges you for it…

I’m with you 100* on that GL. In fact to be totally honest I never even thought about the amount of smoking of whatever he’d done or that he’d brought it upon himself.

He was a man I admired when I was younger and just thought it a sad and unfortunate event.

it is really sad:( I like him too

Until the 1980s at least you were not a “real man” unless you smoked cigarettes at the very least. Also Howard could have well spent a lot of time on board ship in such places where there would be abundant amounts of asbest and other such nasties – then there is strong radiation on some vessels from the communications equipment (some of the pirate radio ships used to smuggle over hash between UK, NL and BE; and you could take a fluorescent lamp in your hand (unconnected to anything else); stand on deck and it would light up brightly.

His rehab home will at least have better conditions than prison; ironically his medication will be any amount of class A and B in some large quantities.

incidentally I was watching this news film about a growing room in Groningen what got busted and noticed the particularly well laid out and safe lighting system – the only odd thing about it is it looked lke the work of a much older electrician making good use of a large hoard of now obsolete Philips wide spectrum discharge lamps (it was wired in 1970s style rather tban modern EU practice)

In Groningen they have “hangout places” like youth shelters for old people; according to the Dutch description most oldsters there are relatively well behaved and do not blare out loud music from cars (or their mobility vehicles). They don’t need to though as they have their own pirate stations :laugh_at:

Did you ever have a chance to read Howards autobiography GL? I bought a copy after reading an excerpt when I was in my teens and it was a fascinating look into his life,. Thery recently made it into a movie but it was a terrible let down tbh.

Let’s be honest GL, absolutely anyone can potentially develop any form of cancer at any time whether they were exposed to things that cause an incresed risk of developing certain cancers. Many non smokers get lung ancer, men get breast cancer etc and these things happen, sad as they are.

He could possibly have never inhaled in his life and I would have still read the same news about his cancer the other day but nm it is what it is.

I’ve read bits of it; along with other (verifiable) stuff about the Swinging 60s/70s and what really went on then (both partying and day to day living, especially from my electronics boffin friends many of whom had some part in early psychedelia).

He comes across as a genuinely decent person who though he fought the system hard accepted the impact it had on others like his family.

He is of an era where men did take more health/lifestyle risks and TBH I think stress is another big factor. Any sort of clandestine operations is by its nature very psychologically stressful. I have to do a lot more security related stuff for work these days and it takes its toll on me; even though its all 100% legit

Many folk wonder why I hardly sleep; and am constantly on the go trying to do something useful with my life – the biggest reason is I treat it as I’m lucky if I get 30 years more and those years go quickly.
