  • Hi everyone,

My name is Kieran and I’m looking for people who have used novel psychoactive substances (NPS – aka ‘research chemicals’ or ‘legal highs’) to take part in my PhD research. I am using the term NPS very broadly to also include pharmaceuticals which are used off-prescription (either for medical or recreational purposes), synthetic drugs such as mephedrone, methylone, methoxetamine etc and other analogues of traditional illicit drugs, and herbal substances such as mescaline, salvia etc.

The research aims to investigate the relationship between mainstream and alternative media (such as this forum), people’s use and attitudes towards NPS, people’s attitudes towards drug policy in general, and people’s use and dissemination of harm reduction advice and techniques.

All participants are guaranteed anonymity and I take your privacy very seriously. None of the information you provide will be shared with third parties etc. There is a possibility that the research I am doing could be published in academic journals but all names will be replaced and all data made anonymous.

The research consists of a 5 minute survey as well as interviews. If you would be happy to take part you can complete the survey here: Novel Psychoactive Substances, Harm Reduction and Media (more info about the research is on the survey page) and leave your email address at the end if you want to take part in an interview. Interviews can be done in person, or over Skype video/voice call as well.

(Admins – sorry if I am not allowed to post links to research in here, please move or delete accordingly).

Thanks for reading, and all the best.
    Kieran

I’ll do your survey bud as long as you promise to give us the conclusions of your research, whatever they happen to be.

Also how about giving more detail into your chosen study area?

    survey done, hope it’s helpful

Thanks so much, it is very helpful!

More than happy to give the conclusions when I’m finished, gonna be another couple of years yet though unfortunately!

In terms of my chosen area of study, I’m mainly coming from a sociological/criminological point of view to try and understand the relationship between the way that the mainstream media discuss NPS and the harms associated with them, and the way in which the same topics are covered on ‘alternative’ media, such as forums, specifically the way that online forums effect people’s perceptions of NPS, their harms and how to minimise harm (e.g. harm reduction practices, warning about dodgy substances, dosing and so on). As a secondary topic I’m also interested in government and private corp censoring of alternative media sources e.g. closing down sites, the recent ISP ‘porn’ filters and their impact on people being able to access forums and websites that provide harm reduction info, and corporate walled gardens such as Facebook, ISPs, mobile browsers, Google etc.

Theoretically I’m coming from a neo-marxist position, mainly Gramsci and Stuart Hall, and their theories on government and corporate control in terms of cultural hegenomy (Gramsci) and media agenda setting and moral panic (Hall, Chomsky). I originally avoided Marxist theories, but after going over a few others they seem to be the most applicable.

Hope that gives a bit more detail!

Also, I’m not totally sure of the forum rules – am I okay to post the survey in the research chemicals thread as well as here, or would that be looked upon as spamming? I use these forums a lot but don’t tend to post much so any advice is much appreciated 🙂

Thanks for the excellent overview of your research and if the body can cope for a few years more I can’t wait to read the results, sounds like it should be an exceptional piece of research :).

Also, while I’m not a mod, I’ve done far worse than post something genuinely useful in 2 places so I doubt Dr B will mind in the slightest you posting another link. and if you’re brace enough to post a few in the cyber-sex forum you might get a few replies because they won’t even notifce them unless the survey saus it’s 19, female and is waiting on skype 😉

thanks Kieran – i’ve completed it and it was one of the best put together ones (for both ethics/transparency and science) I have seen for a while.

The only thing I would add is the incident when PV was blocked only occured when I was experimenting with a PAYG mobile sim for data transmission; a proxy interceptied the request and said I had to prove I was over 18. The mobile company involved makes it easy enough to do this; but requires ID number from official ID (passport/driving license). They do have big contracts to securely process this data so I wasn’t surprised; but this shows the level of potential tracking available when using mobile devices (as tracking facilities are “baked in” as part of the network anyway and have been since the start of cellular radiotelephone deployment; simply as the devices would not work correct without it!)

My work phone on a different network does not have “over 18” sites activated but allows access to pv.org. Curiously both companies have strong connections with Germany which is strict about age limits on line; it illlustrates the different commercial decisions made about censorship.

Thanks Tryptameanie for the advice on posting in other threads, very helpful! Also thanks for the kind words about the research – most people just tend to have criticisms (which are of course also welcome!).

And thanks for completing the survey General Lighting, and for the info on age verification – it’s exactly the sort of stuff I’m looking for! I might quote your comments in my research if that’s okay? No worries at all if you would rather I didn’t.

No problem bud, always more than happy to help when it’s for something as worthwhile as this :).
