I suspect it was a “country club” before – this is a 70s/80s leisure concept of an out of town bar/restaurant – where redneck middle class businessmen who were too unfit to chase foxes would have illicit affairs with their secretaries, perhaps get into a fight with a lad young enough to be their own son over competition for local “wenches”, and then hop into his car pissed as a newt.
My parents worked in one of these places a long time ago and told me exactly what went on, so I have a particularly low opinion of these venues and those who attend them…
On many occasions the customers never made it home, instead ending lives of themselves and others on the road; and cops got electronic breathalysers in the late 80s which were more reliable. This made country clubs far less viable business propositions, so their owners had to diversify.
In the early 1990s they had a brief flirtation with the commercial rave scene; until the tabloid media and whinging middle englanders (the same ones forced out of the country clubs) exposed these places as “dens of drugs and vice”; my the mid 90s most of these got raided and shut down or forced out of business by excessively harsh license conditions and random checks by old bill which frightened away the punters.
ISTR that Milwaukees (post-closure) was squatted and partied by crews from outside the area (maybe our lot in the Thames valley?) and the local chavs were angry so they burned the place rather than let “outsiders” use it, although this is from memory of a distant e-mail conversation. I suppose if its still being used it couldn’t have been torched that badly though..
