I remember Jason in the early days of the rave scene in Reading (1990-2). He had everything then – a dream job in a record shop (with access to all the latest promos etc), a beautiful girlfriend, was on the guest list to every rave in the city…
I don’t know what happened to him in the mid to late 90s; whether all the above disappeared as some of the Record Basement staff destroyed themselves and their business as the combination of long hours propped up by drugs took their toll (something that has unfortunately claimed so many businesses run by young party-friendly people 🙁 ) – but I was shocked to read this in my local news.

THE mother of Reading club legend DJ Milky has told how depression stole her son’s life and described his family’s attempt to bring some good out of his untimely death.
Fiona Chant, 54, found her 33-year-old son Jason dead in his room early one morning when she took him a cup of coffee.
She said: “I touched him and I knew he was long gone and all that was left for me to do was call the police, but he didn’t kill himself – the depression did.”
DJ Milky got his professional name from his uncanny resemblance to the Milky Bar Kid from the 1970s TV commercials.
Full story in this week’s Reading Chronicle.
I don’t know the guy but that’s sad to hear.
How exactly do you die from depression though? (that’s not meant to sound sarcy like it does)
Does your body just give up from the stress? Or does she mean it inadvertently caused his death by sapping his energy for life and letting drugs (or whatever) consume him. I’m interested to know. Excuse me if I sound a bit ignorant.

I haven’t had a chance to read the main newspaper article – but would expect that Jason took an overdose of some sort to end his life, unsure whether this was accidental or intentional..
I will try and find the newspaper in the library later – I am determined not to buy it as I felt by not putting a full report it was almost as if the Chronicle is using this tragic event to try and sell their newspaper!
a few years back they also printed a very negative story about a friend of mine who committed suicide 🙁
Update from Reading Chronicle – details of tribute event shown at the end.

A TRIBUTE gig to a Reading club legend found dead after suffering years of chronic depression, will help build a new classroom for children in the Gambia.
After finding her son Jason Chant, 33, aka DJ Milky, dead in his room, his mother Fiona, 54, told the Reading Chronicle the family began planning to build a permanent memorial to him.
And now two months later she has established contact with a primary school in the Gambia’s Soma region where children desperately need a new classroom.
This week Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford recorded an open verdict after hearing Jason was found hanging in his room.
Mrs Chant said: “These guys that are driven to such despair have no idea how much love they are leaving behind, and how much torture they leave.
“What happened was a total waste. The only way that we can have something positive about Jason’s life is if we spread the money as far as possible.
“And in the Gambia it’s called the Smiley Coast, and everybody always made the comment that Jason was always smiling.”
And now club scene friends of Milky – a favourite at The Fez and Revolutions clubs in Reading – are staging a Let’s Party night in his memory.
Organiser Nick Cross (Big Nick) said: “I remember him for his cheeky smile, his wit and his unique style.
“So many people knew him, and it’s just a shame what happened. Everyone wanted to get together and do this.
He has assembled a top lineup at The Fez tomorrow (Friday) night including Milky’s old school friend Rob Le Croix, playing the “the very best of RnB” in the Souk bar.
In the main room Milky’s favourite music – Funky House – will be delivered by Si-Paul (Ministry of Sound), TNT and Lee LOUDA, Jose Matador, and local DJ Alfresco.
And in the VIP room, family and close friends will be treated to a back-to-back session by Kingpin and Scott C.
Big Nick said: “We’ve got the best DJs in Reading and London – you can’t get any better than what we’ve got.”
Doors open at 9.30pm, with a door charge of £5 (£7 after 11pm).
RIP Jason.
The Love of Music was his life as you all know well, that spirit party vibrating within your souls, you’ll sense him in every corner on a great party night.
His legacy lives on through all who knew and loved him and within his son
The Hope, he left is is etched on the sea of faces of the children of Soma, Gambia – that without him going they wouldn’t have the chance of an better education. Put plainly – his demise is their gain – Bitter Sweet is this life of ours.
What took him to this place of everlasting rest, we the survivors will never know, but drugs and alcohol were not contributing factors, inner torment, despair, and stresses are high on the agenda of killers today. Going was not the answer but for that moment, when that inner voice spoke to him, he felt it was the right thing to do. How wrong he was to leave us.
His final legacy is “HOPE” for all – seek help when that inner pain is too great to bear, no burden can be carried within a tormented soul – help is, but a breath away
I didn’t know Jason, but I feel touched by his sad story. I am currently typing up his memorandum in The Reading Evening Post as I work for Surrey & Berkshire Media in advertising.
It’s truly awful how depression can push someone to such extreemes.
With deepest respect I am sorry for the loss and I hope my ad in the Paper on 7/9/07 will be appropriate.
