mate, that was fucking stupendous. easily the best organised rave ive been to inside. hats right off to headfuk, the setup was lush. proper quality stage design, wicked decor, gymnasts swinging from the ceiling, a halloween drama peice in the middle which had the crowd transfixed, live bands, live visuals, wicked sets from the djs, a variety of sounds…fan-fucking-tastic. PRANK sorted out the hardcore with some relentless techno to stomp to for those stuck in the standard freeparty rut.
nice site, well secure, out of town enough to avoid the crackhead gangs, right on a flight path, so we created fuckall extra noise, good security, well played. only shanty thing was the moat you had to traverse to get in the door, which i think was about 90% piss by the end of the night. lets just hope no k-heds took a tumble into it. arf.
heard some people bitching that “it may as well not be a rave”. i assume they were suggesting that because there was a stage, noone got mugged and it wasnt just wall to wall techno, that makes it something else well if it does, im more up for that something else than raves.
that was actually my first real headfuk party – and it was excellent, I am still blown away by how much extra effort was put into it… I would say this is one of the best events I have attended in the whole 15 years of raving
i wish I didn’t have to go to work in a boring office now and could just make a start on dubbing and editing the video footage (got about 2.5 hours to go through!)
i think that was like that from the start, the source of this flood being a busted drain somewhere – it did pen a bit as we were going into the building! a mate of mine did fall into it, as did quite a few others. still, it will all wash off and it finds its way into Old Father Thames anyway along with all the rest..
for those (mostly Londoners) who think that area was “too far away”, take a look at a map! it is barely 5 miles from Heathrow/Uxbridge area, surely you can get a night bus to there? or get a bike. I’ve ridden to that area from Reading before (its only 20 miles) Someone else cycled up there as they had locked their custom-built singlespeed street bike to the fence…
considering it was an industrial area, yea, i doubt its was bad environmentally, altho i pity the poor fool whose building it was, i spose thats what he gets for havin an empty warehouse. bad luck to those coated in piss, tho, im sure it dunt matter if you dunt notice.
you got loads of footage! hope its mostly usable, it was one of the lightest raves ive been to, so should be ok. id love to have that footage to fuck with. i did a few walk arounds, but i really couldnt be fucked, cameras put you at a distance from the action, and my tiredness was doin that anyway.
good to see you again mate, sorry about the confusion with the cpu, i couldnt hear shit. i swear we need a chalkboard to communicate on backstage, i coulnt hear shit. some geez gave me a line, but i could hear what he was on about, so i accidentally insulted him by givin the wrong standard reply. was a bit hairy for a second.
not too many squatparties you can try that one at, but it was safe as fuck there, noramally theres an area or two i feel nervous walking past, but there was nowt of the sort. i would say that from experience, parties should be at least that far away from london to aviod trouble. its the first london party ive been to in years, and it has re-established my faith that they can be done. massive respect to headfuk HQ.
I don’t think TBH the estate management company were that worried about the building, it has been empty and insecure for some years now and like most other good party buildings is a former small factory unit which is actually hard to sell nowadays with Britains manufacturing industry virtually non-existent.
I reckon we all need some sort of comms/talkback system for events like this (its fairly easy to make a low-cost one out of standard BT telephones and cabling much of which can be recovered from warehouses!) would be good for the sound crews as well as you often have to adjust kit which is some distance away from the speakers.
most of the footage I got is useable (and I managed not to fall off the stage whilst doing tracking shots) but I tend to be quite harsh on myself about only keeping the best bits if I am doing full edited versions, there are also a lot of duplicate shots in my footage as I try to get the best one out of 3-5 tries…
there’s also a few bits where I was just trying to get a relatively constant sound track to use for the background music. I will be copying the tapes to VHS (with timecode display on screen) this week – will be sending a copy of these up to Martina @ HDFK.
This won’t be much good for editing locally but gives if people give me the timecode points I can capture better quality bits.. unfortunately I don’t have the facility to clone whole DV tapes but can make MPEG1 or MPEG2 copies of DV footage or output to DV, SVHS or VHS (MPEG1 is easier and quicker for me as the computers I am using to do this are 4 years old PC’s, not flashy custom non-linear edit boxes!). will also try and put together a few edited versions of the best bits..
shame i hadnt brought the longer lead so we couldnt film live stage acts, but hey, cant have everything.
TBH the stage would have been a bit congested for live video ; but perhaps with more pre-planning something could be sorted out.
I cannot think of any reason whatsoever for anyone to criticise HDFK – for one thing no one got hurt or killed – there were not even “flashpoints” or real arguments there – maybe not central London its still West London and a London crowd – but a real crowd of ravers, not the posers and predators that seem to be infesting parties these days.
there were hiccups like late starts (bear in mind though the power setup would have made Dr Frankenstein proud, when you are dealing with 400v at 400amps and live cables you do not rush things!) and times when the sound was distorted, but people underestimate what is involved
the engineering effort required (which included multiple mic setups and live instruments) is phenomenal compared to your average rig which merely plays recorded music from decks or in some cases computers. there was also stuff like full-on strand stage lighting rigs and other FX, all of which has to be wired up, operated and then carted back home when everyone is moosed and knackered after a weekends raving.
HFDK pulled off something equivalent to what the BBC achieve at their roadshows/outside broadcasts – and all for extremely low cost to the punter and still with the risks of arrests / confiscation/ hassles from haters
the way they operate is something all crews can learn from. there must have stacks of crew people but everyone pulled together and there was minimal stress compared to many other events I have come across…
and best of all, it was actually a fun night – with everyone there for the right reasons..
curious though that met cops (in a silver blingmobile with multiple blue lights (traffic cops?)) and a large estate which waited behind (these usually contain armed units but thankfully this vehicle disappeared fairly quickly) , turned up in a thames valley area.
perhaps TVP were too busy but they turned up at previous events which have been done by thames valley crews. does perhaps show that although the cops weren’t heavy they still have some “street smarts” and know whos who.
whilst the presence of potentially armed cops is clearly ominous its inevitable with the culture of violence associated with dance music and the hijacking of the term “rave” by the “grime/garage” community. (ARVs have been previously lurked in the background at Reading parties after the spate of UK-garage related shootings in 2001
then again it did bring this to mind..
and like HDFK certainly were “cool for cats” last weekend..
hey hey,
i have been lucky enought o catch a few of their parties before and they rock… absolutly mind blowing… big big cheeky salutes to all of them, its an utter pleasure to be in their presence,
cant wait to get to the next one, missed the last gig due to god damn girlfriend commitments where she dressed me up as prince in a velvet one peice and made me inhale helium in large amounts and open doors to her friends… all very odd but…. things you do to get to curl up with someone at night… hops spring to mind.
clearly quite gutted.
Arrrrgh! Can’t believe I missed that! Didn’t have any other sources of info apart from the phoneline (I got the ring back after 10pm message too, technical hitch apparently).
If anyone’s got any other method they can advise me of for keeping tabs on Headfuk events, please pm me, would love to catch another one and maybe see them again for NYE!
That party was excellent, nice to see you again Mr Rat and glad you enjoyed it.
It was only the third time I’ve been out raving this year, and was well worth taking the trouble to get down to London then over to Heathrow for. For those that thought the party was in a middle of nowhere location, if you followed the directions on the partyline you could get there by public transport. I got an overground train to West Drayton then paid a tenner for a minicab for the six mile jolt out to Poyne, which wasnt bad considering it was after midnight when the taxis charge double.
The live sets were excellent, and although not all the music was to my taste it was all good stuff.
Crowd was excellent, you could happily stagger about fucked without having to worry about getting mugged or someone kicking off on you, and everyone was really friendly.
Cant wait until the next one.
sounds like the creative paradise that partyheads around the SE UK have been needing
peace & noise
