  • Ok here goes………..im sure theres ppl here who have been thru this or know where i can get advice

Basically my lil bro goes to a big juggling/ circus ect meeting once a week and does events and stuff. The people who run it have lived on a farm in Swindon for over 30 years, it has basically been built around by new houses. Its a wicked place with workshops, house, animals pretty much ran naturally and stuff..its about 5 acres!

    U know whats coming

The council in the past have revised the land/ lease ect ( the ppl rent it off the council) and been ok, last week they got a letter saying the land is being sold for around £2mil for development and all will be lost

They blatently know what to do as far as protest, chainihg to trees ect ect but have any of u lot got any advice/ links/ numbers to hardened protesters/ would Schnews be interested/ links to other forums that might help ect ect

    Anyhelp man please

Might be worth starting a discussion here…

Also lobbying locals (and pointing out what they are losing by this land being sold) is often more effective than extreme protest actions these days, which are only often supported by other activists and are seen to be merely a nuisance by locals (even those who would support their cause!)

could try going for a grant to buy it and develop the good stuff that is going on there already

    it’s definately not impossible

Schnews is a good one to start with, also try going down to any local protest sites and explaining to them what the situation is.

I’ve just come off a site up here in Scotland and the most important thing is that the people who live there and want the help should be up for taking action themselves as well.

If you take site before the sale goes through, the eviction costs could be greater than the cost of the sale of the land. It cost them £1.3 million to evict a site up here with one tunnel and the three tree sites. If they are willing to put in the work it could easily become no longer finalncially viable for the council to evict them, as the council would have to evict the protesters before the sale goes through.

Check roadalert.org.uk for details of sites around the UK, all of which have contact details and like I said go down and visit them and explain the situation and some of them may be willing to help.

Usually once a site is established a lot more people will come down to help. Also it could be far easier as they have rights to the land at the moment and therefore could start building some hardcore defences and lockons.

    good luck man

Not from my experience, people will rarely rake site unless asked by locals. The two sites I’ve been involved with and three others running at the moment I’ve visited or spoken to people from have massive ammounts of local support. As for being ineffective, usually when it comes time to take site the battle is lost, but recently there have been a few cases which have won. Nine Ladies has just won its appeal case and could very soon be safe. Also Camp Bling in Essex has forced the proposed road to be side lined, and put up for review.

Also the protest scene has shrunk dramatically since the 90’s and has attempted to shed the image it gained at its peak, which was predominantly of smelly drunken munters trashing the woodland the aimed to save. As it has gone underground again and is gaining less media attention the sites that are arround are better kept, run community outreach programmes and also have open invite “free cafes” and suchlike.

Definatly have a look at funding, in scotland a community group can apply to the big lottery fund to buy premisis as long as you can prove you can aid the community and create “social gain”. This is for 240.000 grant so theres a start, I am sure there will be somthing similar in England. Look up the big lottery fund.

You could also recieve funding on an enviromental level by saying you will make the site more enviromentally friendly or by creating “educational” gardens and woodland areas,

Basically you have to convince the local community, the funders and the council that not only is this an invaluable space to the community now but that its going to be even better if you can buy it.

You will have to set up some sort of commitee or group to apply for the funding as you will need a chairperson, a secretary, a treasurer and a bank account. Research this carefully though as it may be different elsewhere in the UK.

Other avenues you can look at are setting up workshops for “dissadvantaged people” through local youth groups of rehab centres, or for “ethnic diversity” where you invite other communitys to mix with you.

always remember when filling in grant applications they love the jargon and key words, I have highlighted some of these with inverted commas”” to give you a start.

    Good Luck
    S.S.

Another thought have you thought of applying to be a city farm?
