Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says 15 British naval personnel captured in the Gulf are free to leave

He repeated Iran’s view that the British sailors and marines “invaded” Iranian waters, but said they were being released as a “gift” to Britain. He said they would be taken to Tehran airport and flown home within hours.

Downing Street welcomed news of the release, while Iranian state media said the British crew members “shouted for joy” on hearing the news. Television pictures showed the Iranian president smiling and chatting with the crew. He joked to one: “How are you? So you came on a mandatory vacation?”

The Britons were wearing suits, rather than the military uniform and tracksuits they wore in previous pictures. The one female crew member, Faye Turney, wore a blue headscarf with dark pink shirt.

An unidentified crew member said: “I’d like to say that myself and my whole team are very grateful for your forgiveness. I’d like to thank yourself and the Iranian people… Thank you very much, sir.” Mr Ahmadinejad responded in Farsi: “You are welcome.”

Good to see that this endend sensibly :group_hug

      Great news :group_hug

I’m probably goign to be considered an asshole, but aside from one or two of the captured, I think they really fucked up.

I don’t know what the British military regulations are on how to act in those situations, but them all smiling and waving and tanking the Iranians and shit really got me mad. I did notce one or two of them were standing off to the side looking surly and thats about what I would expect to see.

they were all acting very friendly to their captures. Even if they were forced to make statements they didnt have to look so happy about it. A simple robotic statement would have been fine. It Would have worked to express to the world we are doing this under distress and not of our own free will. Im betting the debrief will be very interesting. And I am sure there will be statements about how it was all done under distress and the brass will say they did the right thing. But after the media attention dies down they will be quietly moved into dead end jobs, Retired, etc. For their fuck up.

i dunno mate, soldier or not i’d kiss the arse (not literally :laugh_at:) of the fella who released me from an iranian jail, when i coulda potentially been there a helluva lot longer, scared n confused about what was gonna happen…

First off this isnt me or you being taken hostage walking down the street or while we are on holiday. These are military personnel that were conducting military operations in the gulf. I am not getting into the right wrong of if they were in the right or wrong place when they were taken. All I will say is they are expected to conduct themselves in a military manner. Buddying up to their captures is not acting in a military manner. Given your captures Propaganda to use agisnt your military and county isnt a good thing no matter what. You can and should resist even if its making a strange face while reading the scripted confession they hand you. Cross your eyes. Frown, dont smile, act sad, do not look happy and greatful to your captures. __________________

I’m glad for them, think this is the best way it could have turned out for all concerned, wish everything else was as easily sorted.

Timid rabbit? I understand where you’re coming from and yes soldiers are trained but they’re also human (ie possible to scare) and we don’t know what their orders are – they may have been told to observe as much as possible and do whatever it takes to get home – possible yes?

If someone said to me smile, laugh, look happy and we’ll let you see ur home/parents/children again OR don’t do as we say an we’re gonna torture and kill all of you staring with the girl first I know what i’d do.

yeah but from what i seen and read in various newspapers and websites , they werent getting tortured. which is great news, so again brings me back to why so happy with the captures
as i said it just pisses me off im glad they were released without harm, but i suspect underhand workings going on

well ya know, if they were/weren’t tortured, of course, that would be public knowledge immediately… *sarcasm*

ya know, at the end of the day – they are human. soldiers, yeah… but human kinda overrides that. and so they wud suck up to their captures. cmon, we all would. you been released from a shit-scared state jail, not knowin what the fuck was gonna happen – you gonna be grateful.

fuck it mate, your argument kinda tries to disregard human instinct. and human instinct overrides what the army tells ya, whatever happens.

sorry if this sounds attackin, i had nought but booze all night unfortunately, so i’m a bit argumentative!

yeah faiir do mate , you express how you feel as i do, no harm done, but now what do you think of the two seeling there stories

i wouldnt be suprised if a deal has been made … maybe a few iranians being held in Britain at the moment might suddenly … disappear …

we had five of their before all this. ive heard we gave back 3 but i dunno.

first off soz mate that was pretty attackin, i can’t even remember postin it :head_bang

i think selling their story while the political debates and general tension with iran still goes on is not really the right action to take.

i would be a bit skeptical about how much they have been allowed to talk about it – in fact i’m a bit suspicious. surely they could have been briefed about what to say by the government (the secretive, mi5 kinda shit) to heighten tensions with iran and in the long run add another justification for the war america seems to be pushing for… and no doubt britain would follow.
