“Leeds students have claimed police used ‘brutal and vicious’ tactics to break up a street party.”
it never gets reported when it happens to ravers, but when it happens to the middle-class pretentious students, even on a real small scale, then it makes the news. is the class divide over? i dont reckon so….
fair play to them for puttin on the party tho :weee:
P.S: i don’t mean all students are like that, but there is a quite large percentage that fit the stereotype. no generalisations made on any students here of course 🙂
i guess the lesson = don’t have a party in / near a residential area
the other lesson is that CCBB (cops can be bastards).
at least police violence directed against people having fun is now an equal opportunities experience
2007 political correctness, from the great british police force:
“we don’t discriminate… no matter how much money you have, what clothes you wear, what race or religion you are… we’re still cunts to the lot of ya!”
:groucho:
I spent a long time living in Leeds and the old Bill there do like to get a bit punchy and it wouldnt surprise me that they slapped a few students.
friends of mine where at this party, i should of been there, a few friends dj’d and untill you have been to the parties they have in hyde park in leeds dont judge, its not like any residential area, its a town that is occupied by literally just students! ive been to lots of parties in hydepark in leeds and sopme that have had 3 rigs in one house and they have never been busted just a shame this happened as a few of me friends got hit round the head with battons by the cops for tryin to get out safely! the cops penned them in from either side yet claimed they wouldnt follow police orders and leave!
Ive been to loadsa partys in Hyde Parkraaa
TBH I reckon one problem is a change in the mindset of students over the years, as life gets more ruthless and compeitive
I lived in a University “city” (Reading) myself for many years of my life and had some friends who were students and also others who were staff/lecturers – also some students would come to our raves and friends would promote events in the student union venues (when/if the cops let them) so I got a good idea of what was going on on campus.
Over the years it was clear that there were a lot more conservative minded, ruthlessly ambitious students around (I think the type of person going up to study changed a lot as well).
It was not as much a case of traditional social class but the concept of a degree being seen merely as a career path/meal ticket rather than a way to “discover yourself”. I’ve noticed over the years fewer and fewer students get involved in protest/progressive politics, they are now just wanting to get the best market value out of their studies. There are also many students who are looking to careers within the Police or Civil Service, and they would obviously be more supportive of conventional authority structures.
Isn’t it approaching (or already) exam time at Uni?
If the area is a student village, I would not be at all surprised if other students called the Police on 999 and demanded that cops “did something” to stop the noise as it was “interfering with their revision”..
i know hyde park well having been a student in leeds. depending on where in the park it was/how loud it could be disturbing people for sure. its just as reasonable for students to call the police as anyone else. there are definitely also non students living alongside the park (on the road that runs parallel to otley rd) – i know someone who lives there (he would be quite likely to be at the party tho’)
lets not let the police off the hook for blaming students or whoever else for calling them – its the police that make the decision to knock a few heads

I don’t think its letting the cops off the hook – they clearly overreacted and those who were affected should take it up with IPCC
but local people also have the option to accept that although noisy its merely an end of term party and thats the consequence of living in the Uni district and to live with it, like they presumably have done for years (why has this only happened now?)
Its like living by the dogs home and complaining about the barking..
IMO if locals call the cops and people get hurt those who call them are at least partly responsible for the consequences, I bet there is lots of crime in Leeds and the the cops could have occupied themselves elsewhere than the student party..
OTOH I get the impression a lot of locals these days would deep down like to crack heads themselves or take vigilanté action but feel they are held back by “political correctness”.
When I lived in SE England (even more of a suburban middle england area than a uni place) I’ve had teens down the road from me have an end of exam party, and didn’t even consider calling any authorities.
The lad responsible actually knocked on my door the next day to apologise, I thanked him for apologising but said it didn’t bother me at all, wished him luck in his studies and told him to look out for events on the Ridgeway after he had done his exams :groucho:
In the 90s a noisy party that only lasted a weekend would be to an extent tolerated and accepted by the locals, someone calling 999 to it would be seen as very unpopular or a grass – IMO people have got a lot more angry and intolerant these days..
