I’ve been camping in a small disused quarry on the edge of the North York Moors many times without any problem, but………
I plan to put on a bit of a do there next month and wondered if the rangers and police have any aditional powers to remove or confiscate with it being a National Park.
Thanks.
never heard of any, but i could be wrong…
however, i do know of a few people up round your way who may well be up for coming to a party who have put parties on themselves
and its not too far for me either raaa
PM me more details nearer the time?:bounce_fl
legally there are no additional powers that i’m aware of
but there are rangers that will suss out something is going on sooner than in other areas
i would recommend avoiding throwing parties in national parks and SSSIs … they are protected for a reason…
Lem, I’ll see how things progress and be in touch.
Glo, I know what you’re saying, but this site is well tucked away and does get used (and abused). Whenever I have been there I have cleared loads of cans etc before using it, and leave it spic and span. So, the net result of me being there is that the place is better off. That sort of makes it ok in my mind.
D.
yeah, national parks ARE like that for a reason, but at the same time large companies do often get permission to quarry and destroy the landscape (nine ladies anyone? though thanks to campaigning it hasn’t happened there yet), and there are often old quarry sites that are ideal for parties, so i wouldn’t say avoid at all costs…
check the area for a plinth with a map on it.
This is usually provided by Defra or English Nature/Natural England and shows the boundaries of the SSSI and sometimes info on what exactly is being protected/preserved there.
Often the SSSI bit is actually fairly small (as its rare plants or inverterbrates in a certain areas that are being protected) and the rest of the quarry is public access.
In some areas there are often fairly stern warning signs saying that “this area is a nature reserve” with warnings of fines/prosecutions for those who destroy or contaminate the area, and boundary fences.
If you have a GPS unit you can get the exact grid references of the site, and check on Natural England’s website to see if any SSSI’s are nearby.
Keep your party out of those areas and prevent people from depositing rubbish there, and you are less likey to get any major grief from rangers and other such types.
was up at nine ladies stone circle last year for solstice, was great, ppl have lived up there for 7 yrs or something to stop the quarrying of the site.

id say just be careful mate, all in all many accidents happen in old quarrys when its light and not under any influence from substance or alcohol so just be careful and hope it goes well mate 🙂
i’d say that is top advice GL, not thought of it, but now you say it, its obvious (like most good ideas)
old quarries can be dangerous, but squat parties & free parties can be dangerous when people are muntered generally.
makes me think of 9 ladies again… is 2 or 3 people have died there over the years? (whilst drunk or whatever)
