had a discussion with my mates in the pub on sunday. I reckon free parties are more than just an excuse for getting muntered, because they show how a group of people can self police and create a free space. for me, they were part of my political education whilst I was at uni (fair enough, I was doing a degree in politics). also there is a higher proportion of people thinking in alternative ways at these things, and discussing them (well sometimes)

my mates reckoned I was being idealistic (could be a fair cop, but there are worse things to be…) and they are just an excuse to get muntered for a good long time, without being searched or paying to get in and in nice surroundings

Before i started goin to free partys i used to go to drum n bass nights all the time in oxford with mates and it was always about the music, but when i was told about free partys everyone said you could just get mashed in peace do what you want etc. So that was what it was for the first few months, but then i started likein it for the atmosphere and started likin the other music. Now thou i reckon i have a better time if i try to stay more strait headed. Gettin too mashed only makes people car bound anyway so yeah its more than about gettin mashed, defo.

to me the free party movement makes a bold political statement, a very liberal one (not to say everyone is left-wing who goes, just the idea of freedom to do certain things is a liberal ideology)

i reckon it depends what parties you got to

NFA still do some really creative stuff as i’m sure many others still do

‘back in the day’ the free festivals were thrown by people who (mostly) lived outside the system. then the city kids came along with a new drug looking for somewhere ‘free’ to get wasted and dance all night… ideas were exchanged and a symbiosis occured

a lot of parties are purely to make noise and get fucked though

Yep – I think taking part in a free party is definitely a radical statement and action whether or not those attending consider themselves to be activists

just attending involves disregarding traditional capitalist views over propery rights, even if all people want to do is dance and get fucked on drugs,

after all you could do that at raindance or HTID or crasher provided you are willing to pay the entry price but free parties are a step further (which is why the Establishment hate them more…)

The best times I,ve ever had have been at free parties. :love:
It’s about much more than drugs or music or even dancing. :bounce_fl :bounce_fl
It’s about getting together with like-minded freedom-loving people. In the case of smaller free parties it’s mostly like-minded local people. :weee: :weee: :weee:
Personly I would not be seen dead in a mainstream towncenter plebian nightclub full of angry drunken shirt and collar slaves (male) and sexually-offrensive half-naked unattractive drunken sluts (female). Both of whom I despise and detest.
