So, when the old bill turn up at your outdoor party, what is the best tack to take with them? They would rather you not be there, and you want to keep partying. Obviously be civil to them etc, but are there any key pieces of legislation to talk about or areas of the CJB that can work in our favour? Should a person admit that they are the spokesperson for the party? At what point do you accept that you have to shut it down or get you system siezed? Anyone know what North Yorkshire Police’s policy is on parties? All advice appreciated.
turn down the volume:wink: :groucho:
some one who is fairly sober from the crew should talk to them.
ask if there have been any complaints. if there are 2 or more complaints about noise this could potentially lead to the cops getting a sec63, which means they can take all your gear, so turning it down a little, or pointing the rig in a different direction may help
if you can, have a trained first aider, suitable fire safety equipment, litter collections and make sure that access isn’t blocking the way if fire / ambulance need to get through. all that shows you can be responsible and will help you.
I know one crew that give the cops a phone number and ask them to call if there are any complaints!!
make sure that your party is a private event (no flyers or internet adverts giving out location or partyline etc) this can be used against you in Public Event License prosecutions
just be as co-operative as you can, while asserting your right to party
Cheers Glo, At what point would you shut your system down? When they threaten you with a Sec63? When they go off to get one? (I assume this is the letter sign by a senior officer) Also, are bobbies upto speed on the law in this respect or are they likley to leave you alone if you meet them half way? D.
when i first started going to parties, i got directions from a copper, and that was in north yorks. was about 10 yrs ago now, like.
From what i know the underlying culture in each force can often stem from that of the chief inspector of the area, but obviously all those things glo said are usually the key things on the night.
strictly speaking, cops shouldn’t confiscate your equipment without a legal cause to do so (sec63 gives them free rein) but they could argue that they are preventing a breach of the peace if you or your crew act stupidly
i would switch off when negotiations become impossible, either because the party has got way out of hand, or because there is open conflict, or because you are being served with sec63. legally speaking, if you are served with sec63 and you switch off and pack up, you haven’t broen the law
some people would surely say that that was giving in. i would say live to party another day
if your party is well thought out and executed then you will reduce the risk of any problems
take some time to check over up-to-date OS maps of the area… if you can’t be heard by any residents, aren’t on protected areas such as SSSIs, national parks or trespassing on private land, blocking public roads, causing a public health hazard by letting people shit everywhere etc etc the cops have no reason to bother you. it’s a tall order to get it all spot on, but the more effort you put in, the better the party and the less hassle you’ll have as a result…
there are enough news reports now of cops saying “party-goers were in danger” etc… unless your party is causing total mayhem to people living nearby, or polluting the land it’s on, the cops are likely to take a fairly pragmatic approach, which is “it’s a party, and someone is taking responsibility, let it carry on”
basically there is no one point that you can define as being the “switch off or lose” moment. it’s just a judgment call you need to make with a level head
