  • This is taken from the EDP’s usual report about NYE incidents compiled in conjunction with Norfolk Constabulary press office

    Quote:
“On New Year’s Eve the atmosphere is one of bon homie but nastiness is never far away when people are drinking heavily,” he said.

“But we have a vested interest in supporting the entertainment sector. The alternative is that people will begin to turn to the dangerous, unregulated music events.”

I always thought from what I had been told over the last 10 years long standing locals of East Anglia (I only moved here recently myself) that at least one reason EA’s free party community is so determined against all odds to continue, is because of the attitude of the Police throughout East Anglia!

The impression I got is that cops seem to have made it as difficult as possible to put on dance music events through legitimate channels.

Whilst they say “you can get licenses” they add on various extra “health and safety” conditions to stop events they don’t like the look of), or “recover costs” making it too expensive (especially if they make crews pay for CID from outside forces to nanny their event!)

So people in East Anglia took matters into their own hands and set up free parties as the remaining dance music events had been forced into over-commercialisation….

I think someone should write a letter to a person of authority explaining raves. I know you wouldn’t get any results but an informed well written letter explaining rave culture would be quite a good idea and show em that we’re not dangerous drug addled nazi’s as they’d have some people believe!

I’d write one myself but my grammer skills are a bit shit! Send a couple to a few papers and music mags.

Try and explain ourselves to people on why we do these events and try and bridge the gap.

loads of people have tried writing letters since 1989, everyone from the Young Tories to civil rights activists.

there have been some concessions such as the fact that venues can open “as late as 2am” (this wasn’t heard of until the 1990s rave scene took of!) but the big sticking point is that drugs are illegal and when venues become a bit “tolerant” people take the piss.

Most of the “normal” people I know round here aren’t anti drugs and rave culture because of all the bullshit the politicians, media and cops tell them, they are that way because they have seen people close to them fuck up badly or have been inconvenienced by an event.
