  • I’m think about running Linux or ubunto on my phone, got the necessary software and such but just wanted to know if anyone out therr has used it in this application. I’ve seen it on YouTube and it looks siick but just want opinions on whether it was worth it or not.

My 0.02 cents worth – if you are going to do this sort of thing, make sure you know how to reverse it in case you don’t like your new Operating System.

Such things are very personal choices, and what one person likes, annoys the hell out of somebody else.

Wise words sir, I’m really on the fence with this, it looks soo cool and easy to use. But at the same time, like you say, if I don’t like it can/will I be able to go back to Android……hopefully I could.

I shall have a good in-depth look in to all I need to know about it today.

Have you used ubuntu before? I’m not too sure what the mobile version is like but ubuntu and other linux distros tend to be quite a shock to the crowd who are used to windows/mac. That said you will be able to revert without too much issue in case you dislike it. Android is free and open source and based on the Linux kernel anyway (which is why they are able to configure ubuntu for mobiles easier than other OSs)

Android being Linux based anyway I guess my question is why not custom android ROMS with some A2SD partition action?

My answer is I have no clue what you just said hahaha

You mean swapping over internal ROM chips, to get a new Operating System. Very old school.

I’m not sure how you do it on an Android phone, but IIRC on a Windows Mobile you set up a bootable Linux installation on an SD card with a PC or laptop, pop the card into the phone, and start up the phone from the SD card. It’s much easier than dismantling the phone and swapping chips over, then putting the phone back together.

On such phones (I’ve only played with the early 2002-2003 style things) when you take the battery out, the phone is pretty much reset anyway. If not using the reset on the phone forces it back to Windows.

So, check the reset on your HTC first – does that take the phone back to Android anyway? If it does then a bit of experimentation should be harmless, although to be on the safe side, make sure you have copied all the data from the phone first (probably onto a PC or laptop running Windows… sigh).

Doesn’t matter what OS your PC is running, you can backup your phone just fine. The joys of the modern world!

can turn an old phone into a beast with the right ROM; I found one that’s perfect so let me know if you want the name of it it (cant recall now). The key is to trick the phone into thinking that the external SD is infact internal. Damn I love the Desire.

All I see is guy martin

    Marcus loves him too!

    guy martin love in!!

I’m seeing my techie mate I told you about on FB – Its his birthday curry – but if I can I’ll ask him if he can recommend you some reading material / info s he is obsessed with linnux – he even has a penguin mug (and I think techie t shirt! :P)

I just love his accent and manor of speaking! plus that documentary he was in recently was one of the best I have ever seen (and I am not really into bikes).

Apparently even if you’re not into bikes the TT film is worth a watch
