I can understand why TV Centre is being closed down as there are less studio productions (in fact a glut of studios in London now not getting as much work) and they have nice new kit in the original Broadcasting House, but it is the end of an era and a stark reminder about how much broadcasting industry is downsized nowadays. In the 90s I worked on various obscure but important pieces of kit there (though never got to visit the place as it was all sent in parcels to and from Reading!)
must also have been a fair task to edit the farewell show whilst discreetly removing as many references to a dead nonce as possible..
BBC News – Goodbye Television Centre
Coming soon…… Flats, hotel etc…….. just another example of prime locations being sold off
Very sad day, loss of an iconic building
Although another company is buying it they are keeping the building intact and renting out the TV studio space but the realities are when you can buy a HD camera the size of a cigarette packet, huge studios are no longer required to make television, and TV companies have a fraction of the fulltime staff they once had.
Also TV is increasingly news and events based and production shared with radio so what they have done (with our money, remember!) at BH is actually a smart idea…
unfortunately its still guarded heavily by the new owners. a friend of mine urbexed part of a old ITV studio but he had to turn back as all the comms links etc were still active and there was evidence that there may well be remote CCTV viewing (well it was a TV station after all so all the special video links are already there)
just because a TV company doesn’t need a studio doesn’t mean it can’t be used for corporate video conferences as its cheaper and more eco friendly than having folk fly from Singapore to London etc..
I remember reading somewhere the Japanese have bought a lot of the old BBC buildings. Then again many Japanese broadcast engineers do travel to London and stay here for a few months at a time to work with the BBC on research projects, as the new HD TV for the EBU is being trialled at the moment.
