Interesting – though I am still confused as to where exactly the boundaries between Northumbria and Durham are and exactly why these two separate regions which seem to be nearly in the same place exist (probably why I thought half of it was in Scotland a year ago when they had the independence referendum).

I went to the trouble of looking on Bing as well as Google maps (as Bing tends to be better at dealing with European regional borders for some reason) and checked Wikipedia – all to no avail. One explanation given was “to keep the Scots out” but Hadrians Wall is 50 km in the other direction and it also appears that by the time it was built the Scots were already in there.

That does mean what the cops are doing is smart as otherwise you could have even more confusion if penalties between Durham and Northumbria were noticeably different on top of whatever the laws are in Scotland.

Perhaps if there is another independence referendum your areas will get the choice to decide if they are in England or Scotland like those folk in border areas of India and Bangladesh have recently done…
