A toxic batch of amphetamines is causing users to behave violently, with a number of men being taken to hospital as a result, Lancashire police have said. There had been four recent incidents in which officers in Blackburn took aggressive men to hospital after they consumed what is thought to be contaminated amphetamines, commonly known as speed.Users had become violent, acted irrationally and suffered from dangerously high heart rates, police said. They had also been seen to convulse, with an inability to talk or control their actions. Two men, aged 33 and 47, had to be sedated on 27 September after allegedly taking the substance. One of the users was restrained by six police officers and had to be calmed with an anaesthetic. In separate incidents, a 24-year-old man climbed a 2-metre wall and then a tree before being detained for his own welfare, and a 30-year-old climbed on to the roof of a pub.Speed is a class B drug, with possession of it being punishable by up to five years in prison and an unlimited fine, or supply of it up to 14 years’ prison and an unlimited fine for supply.Sgt Pete Latham, from Blackburn police, said: “Clearly for us, no one should be taking drugs, however, we are becoming increasingly concerned about this suspected harmful batch of amphetamines, particularly as the users we have come across have shown extreme signs of violence and a couple of them have put themselves in dangerous situations.”

      Thanks for sharing

the Guardian tends to take a liberal view on drugs and its reporting of anything in the North of England is still fairly high quality.

unusual (though at least it minimises the harm) that this bad stuff is confined to one particular area of the North and has not turned up in Manchester or other bits like Yorkshire / Durham / Northumbria as amfetamine type stims are equally popular in those regions – might even be a sign mean that dealers (most of whom use the stuff themselves) have some sense of responsibility and don’t want to knowingly sell bad/contaminated/mislabelled gear that makes folk ill..

Thank for that, surprised I missed it. Have seen some very suspect things passed off as amphetamines, back then there was no service like WEDINOS (which outright rejected 4 samples I’d sent for testing, wankers). I generally dealt with base which had a very distinctive odour, the same as the powder but much more pungent, but powder seems even harder to get any sort of confidence in what you buy. After experimenting with the flourinated amphetamines the lack of the distinctive smell makes it harder to spot fakes of those I’d imagine.
