Pharmacy derives from a greek word that essentially means witchcraft.

Sorry I’ve wasted my life filling my brain with useful information.

its not dissimilar to the kids buying the brightly coloured branded blends of NPS in spite of there being high quality “generic” deals of compounds readily available to anyone who merely put in a small bit of extra effort – and there wasn’t even that much money put behind marketing these brands, only the sales patter of those in headshops.

BTW the “pharma” originally worked in a place called an apothecary which was the shop or store for the chemicals – but eventually the name also got used for the job title. These places sold “patent medicines” (i.e branded mixtures with confidential contents), tobacco, sweets. and often any poison/hazardous chemical to anyone who would pay without asking too many questions about its intended use, although they also were supposed to give useful medical advice as well.

This led to such places being regulated, as early as the 1200s in the case of Germany and around 1600s in England…

Incidentally NL pharmacy supply stores still use the quasi medieval names of compounds which are a surreal mixture of German, Latin and bits of French to this day…

Your like partyvibes wee random fact encounter

TBH I have to read up on stuff like this for work, I deal with databases full of medical/pharmaceutical data so even if I don’t actually treat people I need to at least know what sort of info should be in them (especially when comparing backups between test and live systems) and check that the systems are usable by the healthcare professionals at the frontline…

Saw someone post a link about German chemists laminating that they have to switch to English to keep up with globalization they sacrifice the mother tongue in science.

There’s just as much science and effort going into those as well, especially the high density ones that weigh about 30 kilos each and are used on more critical projects (there’s likely to be a load at my work today where they are building an extension). No less vital than electricity, computers or anything else in a building – if they aren’t made well (and Britain had some issues with this in 1970s) buildings start to literally crumble and are at risk of falling down after 30-40 years..

Think you meant lamenting not laminating lol.

They do that as well :laugh_at:

EN : Glossy Film Lamination – Packaging – Industries – Adhesives – Markets & Industries – BASF Dispersions & Pigments
    DE : Glossy Film_Text – Glanzfolienkaschierung – Verpackungen – Industrien – Klebstoffe – Industrien & Märkte – BASF Dispersions & Pigments

There is to be fair not a great deal of difference between the English and German versions of the front site and the data sheets, but in a large commercial company there are plenty of resources to translate the content from the original German into English and most importantly check nothing has got mangled in translation.

German (and other related North European languages) retain many elements of word order and sentence structure from Latin that have been abolished or simplified in modern English – it is easy to go wrong especially with autotranslations and end up with something that can has completely the opposite meaning.

Some German profs dislike the increasing use of English loan-words especially for electronics and technology (such as der Rechner being replaced by der Computer) – and consider it equivalent to finding out their Bratwurst has been bulked out with Acronal 3640 due to a meat shortage, which likely did occur about 70 years ago – linked to various other reasons why German is less common in scientific research today) 😉
