  • This is particularly bad, as only recently MY was becoming one of the more advanced countries in the continent for improving conditions of electronics industry workers – added to which equipment built by exploited workers (at any point in the manufacture chain) is also likely to be unreliable and even be dangerous.

Thankfully I have no current need for microwave ovens (the one that my parents got in 1991 and was in our family house for decades is now at my house and still going strong!) but it is an increasingly dilemma now buying any tech, as what were “good” brands (both for reliability and responsible business) even 5 years ago seem to go increasingly down the sewer very quickly…

I used to help manufacture microwave ovens for Sanyo but the place closed down and production moved to a Samsung plant in Wales…….

some folk who used to post here worked in the Philips (then Sanyo) TV factory at Lowestoft, Suffolk until they stopped making CRT TVs.

I think there are still decent well run electronics companies in Wales but (other than Raspberry PIs) they are now making solar panels and the big flatscreens (basically anything that is big and heavy and therefore too much hassle to transport too far away from where it is ultimately used).

Was just reading the NE news and its a big shame how many factories have closed down in the region (or England as a whole) but even in the Asian countries the richer folk don’t want to work in such places (the MY factory was using immigrants from NP and BD which are 2000-3000km away) – also many folk won’t pay extra for quality/durability (which also tends to result in more sustainable production).

I suspect a Miele microwave is far more likely to be built entirely in DE or an EU country (their own website only shows one Chinese factory which makes the cheaper vacuum cleaners), but the cheapest one is €600! I wouldn’t be surprised though if middle class folk in MY still bought them from Germany, especially in more traditional/religious families as especially around now they could easily have about 20-50 people to feed at family gatherings (same as in DE/NL/AT/CH), whilst the cheap stuff gets shipped over to Blighty…
