Places like Colchester and Stanway are now full of wannabe rude boys, it was beef between them and London crew what led to a Ipswich nightclub being shot up (around the same time the prostitutes started being killed) and led to a clampdown on nightlife in what still exists to this day…
another thing is that there do appear to be sporadic legal dance music events in Mid Essex using TENS licensing. Some of them sound like they are quite good.
However I expect the feds only hand over the license very grudgingly and people are quite rightly wary of stitch ups from CID, so they discourage those attending from being too open about purchasing and consuming drugs at these events. Hence why a younger person from those ends would not be used to such blatant activity at somewhere like a squat party!
