NL : what happened here? found this last night (I try to listen to a bit of Dutch every day).
[yt]aRTJzgPEFSI[/yt]
My Dutch is still quite basic (perhaps I can understand 25% of the news video) but I worked out that this outdoor festival was stopped by cops because AIVD (the Dutch Security Service, similar to MI5/MI6 in UK) said it was a fascists gathering and that anti-fascists would also try to attend and disrupt it.
Certainly they appear to have nicked a bloke who is trying to dress like Hitler, and the woman from the council mentions something about the number 88 being used to symbolise "Heil Hitler". And the lads all seem to have not got much hair on their heads either...
I guess this is one "party" I don't mind cops shutting down, but I wonder if any native speakers know more about this?
Public Sector Pention Strikes If they strike and win so they dont have to move their retirement age to something that's in line with the rest of the country's work force will that not just mean that the country will in effect pay for public sector workers to have cushy privileges. I mean the pensions situation is a mess and it needs sorting from what I understand. Not sure I agree to this holding the country to ransom idea.
I am sure its a narrow perspective though so feel free to enlighten me :)

NO G8/G20 2011 delocalized actions no g8
On the occasion of the two-day G8 summit in Deauville (France) some comrades launched a general call for a decentralised global mobilisation. The reasons behind this proposal are, on the one hand, to not let the counter-summit itself become a further experiment (training) of brutal police repression while, on the other, to let the manifold local struggles, with their own paths and insights, take advantage of their differences and make the concomitance with the summit – which is the symbol of all the deprivations and violence to which we are being subjected – a moment of ramifications, multiplication and contamination. The fields that these official summits have for long time advocated to rule are the same on which our daily struggles resonate widely. The spaces of discontent and of lack of a quiet life – from the Greek mass protests, the student (though not only students) rebellions in France, Italy, the United Kingdom, to the ones in North Africa, to which we all express our solidarity and complicity – are sharply increasing realities. They are the ultimate evidence of the failure of a system committed to profit and indifferent to our lives, which are cast into misery and despair. Those who will smile and take the ritual pictures during the summit are the same who omit the cyclical nature of this crisis, telling us that the worst is over, that difficulties are now behind us. They are the same who foment fights amongst the poor, in the stubborn attempt to divide natives from migrants, to chose the good and the bad, to point out the abnormal in its several exceptions. Under the pretext of security, controls are intensified, repressive practices are experimented, techniques of internment are being refined in prisons, migrant detention centres and in all the structures embracing marginalisation as the organising principle of the social peace. Thus, while existences get literally ruined, guilty of not having a piece of paper assessing their citizenry, in the streets the army and the police become specialised in enforcing unjust and dangerous laws that force us into miserable lives where there is nothing but sacrifice. Although the unrest grows stronger among large groups of people, and the basis for a general rebellion starting for Europe are there, we believe there is still a lot of work to do. We believe that the mobilisation called for the 26th and 27th of May can be an opportunity for the different movements to gain strength and courage, to get back to talking to people, to create support and solidarity, to exchange experiences, to try to grow and progress beyond national boundaries. Eventually, this call is nothing more than an invitation to all those who will read it. An invitation to take action to make something possible to happen in Europe, something that can question the centrality of a summit that is not ours. Something useful as an exercise, hoping it will be the beginning of a progressive, continuous strengthening of our struggles, that must become everyone's struggles. Therefore, we invite everybody to take action at any scale. From graffiti writing to actions, leafleting, debates and meeting. The distance from Deauville is a possibility. Free the imagination, we need determination! IF NOT NOW, WHEN? IF NOT ME, WHO? Valencia towards the G8.

CN : Aiyaa! Chinese plagued by exploding watermelons I'm not particularly green fingered but I suspect the reason the "chemical-free" melons are exploding is that they are in fact being contaminated by the chemicals from nearby fields :hopeless::yakk:
Farmers in eastern China has have been left perplexed after their watermelon crops began to explode one by one.
An investigation by state media found farms in Jiangsu province were losing acres of fruit because of the problem.
The overuse of a chemical that helps fruit grow faster was blamed in one report by China Central Television.
But agriculture experts were unable to explain why chemical-free melons were exploding. They cited the weather and abnormal size of the melon as factors.
China Central Television said farmers were overspraying their crops with the growth promoter, hoping they could get their fruit to market ahead of the peak season and increase their profits.

UK/NL : 3 Suffolk lads attempt to recreate historic wartime sea crossing Fair play to them - our generation (those of us aged from our teens to our early 40s) haven't yet grown up in a state of full on war between nations (and todays war is different) so its easy to overlook how things were as the veterans of World War II are getting old and dying out now, so its good to hear of folk in their 20s being interested in our history...

New sites for travellers will be created in Brighton New sites for gypsies and travellers will be created in Brighton and Hove under plans by the Green council.
The newly elected council has vowed to identify land to meet the needs of the travelling community and increase provision in the city.
It comes after Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas supported a motion in Parliament that, if passed, would encourage councils not to evict travellers from a site unless there was suitable provision elsewhere.
Critics say if the proposal is passed it will lead to “dozens of semi-official sites” dotted around the city.
The city currently has one authorised transit site at Horsdean, which has 23 pitches.
The Greens have yet to outline how many sites would be needed to meet the travelling community’s needs or where the potential sites would be.

Muslim extremist fined for burning poppies BBC News - Man guilty of burning poppies at Armistice Day protest
What do we all think then? Personally I think that fine is too fucking soft and shows what a soft touch our justice system has become. Burning the poppies is probably one of the most despicable acts one can do, Totally out of order considering the sacrifices our war dead have given.
I also think had the roles been reversed and a white man burnt a copy of the Koran he would be facing some very serious charges, possibly even jail time. Also what's 50 quid these days, that ain't no punishment. It sends out a message that it's okay to defile one of our national symbols and nothing will happen to you.
Not happy with this at all. :head_bang12…45
