this might come as a surprise to those who see may as predominantly a “techie” person but I have been developing an interest in both Western and Asian astrology and horoscopes; which has drastically increased since I got interested in alternative culture and met a lot of like-minded people.
Although a lot of people for some reason say I am actually a very spiritual person I’m fairly sceptical and down to earth – however I’ve been researching this aspect of life and found a lot of truth in it; particularly the links between star signs and personalities and the lunar cycles and your moods…
Anyone else interested in this?

I’m alays wary of these conversations because it’s never long before someone says “the moon can, like, cause the tides in the sea, and we’re made of water, so it must effect us!” and the whole thing seems a bit pre-recorded and lame.
But I am interested in learning more about how the stars play a part in who we are. Although I feel that there is truth in star signs relating to our personalities, I don’t feel that I go around doing thigs and then saying “I did that because I’m a taurus”. I feel that patterns of behaviour, choices, likes and dislikes have been emerging since I was in the womb (my mother makes comparisons to how i was before birth to my behaviour now).
The closer the horoscope to my actual birth year, date and time the more it seems to paint a general picture of someone I can relate to.
How much of this is suggestive magic? and how much is indeed my legacy of being recycled star matter?

LOL I know what you mean, having heard this sort of stuff from many “weekend hippy” types.
I’m only part-hippy myself, and tend to look upon this stuff from a very pragmatic and scientific POV; in the same way I’d investigate how computer or electronic equipment is operating and why it works.
there are a lot of duff horoscopes being circulated by newspapers worldwide that come from questionable sources; i suspect many of them are automatically generated from a database of random paragraphs.
Celebrity astrologers do not help either; there is also a fair amount of dubious feng-shui information being circulated particularly since the dot-com boom (curiously, a lack of “Engrish” usually denotes a dodgy “westernised” version!)
You are right that the ones which are properly calculated using time, place of birth and other extra data are more trustworthy – I also check the Asian and Western horoscopes together. The correlation here considering the difference in cultures is particularly interesting..
As for the lunar cycles I was sceptical but have only fairly recently noticed their effects; for instance I was feeling both physically and mentally low last weekend (I had not looked at charts or anything like that and don’t always check them regularly) – even went to a party and didn’t enjoy myself all that much (still had quite a good time but wasn’t really “fulfilling”) – and it was marked as a “lunar low” time…

or is it the case that the whole of humanity is being automatically generated from a data base of random paragraphs?

indeed, feng-shui is about feelings and shouldn’t come from sterile translations. I always try to imagine a dragon walking around in my house. If it doesn’t have to double back on itself and its’ tail doesn’t knock things over, i’m feng-shui’d right up, mate

I’m an early taurus and a dragon 22.04.76. A good combination in some ways; once you get me fired up i’m unstoppable 😉

All kinds of related anecdotes about the moon… in psyciatric hospitals the staff often see a marked difference in people’s behaviour around the time of the full moon
i tried to make the above post look nice with a flow of qoutes and some resonse to each.
it just looks a mess and i have loganberry jam all over my keyboard to boot:p 😡 😮
Old Moores Almanack publications do some particularly good paperbacks for all the western zodiac signs…
A useful resource for feng shui info in the UK is
http://fengshuiweb.co.uk/ (from Aylesbury of all places! – Maybe that place needs some positive energy… )
Actually that venture strikes me as particularly positive; the problem with good feng-shui material is (obviously) it is written entirely in Chinese! – what they are doing in Aylesbury is translating it for the benefit of English speakers.
GL… come on and give me a reading
you have some ideas about me from what i’ve posted on here.. combine that with 5.20a.m. 22/04/76 tell me some truths 😎
I must say that I really don’t know a lot about it so can’t really comment.
I’m open to most ideas if they seam plausible though. My girfriends mum has her reading done quite a lot and swears by it all.
So the fact that i’m Gemmini is a bit of a loose idea then? I need exact date and time to decide my horoscope?
I do tend to have two sides to me though. Not in a back stabing two faced sense or a schizophrenic way. Just that I tend to have a quiet, introverted side most of the time but occassionaly go the opposite way. Usually at parties etc… but I suppose that could be said of most people?
This is what I came up with after checking a number of online sources – NB I am not a qualified astrologer but I do check at least 3 sources of data to make sure the main points match up…
Home is important to Dragons, and they are very protective of their families. They fall in love very hard and are sentimental. They usually don’t see any faults in those they love. They tend to be overindulgent with their children.
Dragons are logical and have high standards. Dragons make good leaders and can often be found in sales, advertising, teaching, or working as archaeologists or geologists.
The Dragon is an energetic and impressive character. The Dragon is never short of friends and admirers.
Character
Strengths: Those born in the Year of the Dragon are honest, sensitive, energetic, and charming.
Weaknesses: They are stubborn, short-tempered, eccentric, too fastidious, and excitable.
Compatibilities:
Best: Rat, Snake, Monkey, Rooster
Next: Tiger, Horse, Ram, Pig
Least: Dog, Ox, Rabbit, Dragon
This is the hour of birth animal
OOo Oo! Do me! Do me! (err.. that was supposed to sound like an excited kid, not a low budget skin flick)
If it’s not too much trouble i’d be interested to know what mine comes up with. I’ll IM you my d.o.b etc but you are welcome to post results back on here.
thanks GL, I could have looked some of that up myself really 😉
it seems to describe me fairly well. Oddly, many of the Taurean characteristics are very similar to the Chinese Dragon (stubborn, sudden bursts of energy, loyal friends and lovers, hellish tempers etc) so eastern and western approaches compliment each other in my case 🙂
spooky, but interesting stuff.
do you (or anyone) know anything about the origins of astrology? was it developed purely from observation of character types?
Thanks to GL for this:
Monkeys do well in advertising, journalism, politics, public relations, and selling. They are good with figures. Monkeys are very tempted by money and may compromise their honesty for it.
The Monkey is independent, sociable, and adapts easily to new situations. The Monkey has a very active intelligence and likes to rise to a new challenge.
Character
Strengths: Those born in the Year of the Monkey are astute, independent, and adaptable.
Weaknesses: They are willful and have a tendency to hold others in contempt.
Compatibilities
Best: Dragon, Rat
Next: Rabbit, Ram, Dog,
Least: Snake, Pig, Tiger
GEMINI MONKEY
This combination produces a hyperactive individual both clever and versatile. They go through life with energy and double speed. Need an adoring partner to be happy.
IMO this is about 75% true of me. Although I disagree with the following:
Definately not me:
I’d have liked it to be more accurate, but alas I remain unconvinced (not to be confused with ‘not believing’)
ruud thread. coz of all the various mystical gubbins ive tried to imbue in my rave site (i figured stonehenge is spot on, so researched lots of ‘pagan’ sites) ive come across lots of ancient arts, and have found new understanding of them. also, a lot of ancient theory (initiation, alchemy, astrology, divination, magic, kahballah etc) all have simple over arching theories in common. i dont know how accurate a lot of it is, buti have been surprised on occasion by the accuracy of my horoscope, and also tarot readings.
tarot i think has been discredited because a lot of people beleive that it tell sthe future, where as i would argue that it is a representation of life, divided into sections, the cards you look at are of little importance, more that you think about the different sections of life one at a time, and the truth you imbue them with is your own. v clever, i recon. for the record, 2/3/82, 3:07.
more to follow.
USE is the year of the dog, hour of tiger (if you read that in a Chinese accent it sounds like a good line from a kung-fu movie 😀 ) and western sign pisces
The Dog is loyal, witty, honest, and loving. Dogs need to be loved and will become despondent if they feel unwanted. Dogs are caring and like to look after others. They insist upon fair play for everyone. They are sociable, enjoy group activities, and make good leaders. Sometimes their tempers erupt and can be startling to others. Dogs have a tendency to be self-righteous and this can make them impossible to live with at times.
Dogs are generous and warm-hearted. They lavish a lot of gifts and attention on friends and family. They are very giving, and they fear rejection. They need a lot of tenderness and affection. A Dog tends to be very jealous of partners and can be very moody. They expect a lot from others. Dogs are doting parents, strict and loving.
Dogs like to work with others in fields such as sales, marketing, the caring professions, the law, or teaching. They are popular bosses because they treat their employees well and are diplomatic in situations of conflict.
The Dog is trustworthy and faithful. A Dog is always alert to the needs of others and to its own needs.
Character
Strengths: Those born in the Year of the Dog are good leaders, loyal, honest, and discrete.
Weaknesses: They are somewhat unemotional, selfish, and have sharp tongues.
Compatibilities
Best: Horse, Tiger, Rabbit
Next: Rat, Snake, Monkey, Dog, Pig
Least: Dragon, Ram, Ox, Rooster
as for my own details… my Chinese horoscope can easily be worked out from looking at my new avatar 😀 (the hour of birth animal is the same) – I will not post my western horosocope or full DOB onto the net for security reasons but am willing to discuss it by PM …
it explains the sometimes introverted / extroverted sides to me (I can often exhibit both sides of my character in the same night, particularly at parties…. )
Rats need feedback and often require an audience. It can be difficult to get a word in edgeways. Rats have no sense of time and will break an appointment because they are involved elsewhere.
Rats need to be King or Queen in their homes. If they can’t dominate, they may abandon their partner. They like tidy and clean environments. Rats often are unable to see another’s viewpoint or take their needs into account.
Rats like to be involved in many things and enjoy helping in the community. They are good with figures and make good accountants, shopkeepers, and financial planners. The Rat’s independent and persistent character is best suited to small-scale enterprises.
Rats are very romantic, sensual, and fiercely defend their loved ones.
Character
Strengths: Those born in the Year of the Rat are thrifty, honest, ambitious, and charming.
Weaknesses: Easily angered, love to gossip, and are fussy concerning small matters.
Compatibilities
Best: Dragon, Monkey, Ox
Next: Rat, Tiger, Snake, Dog, Pig
Least: Horse
but I am also a “water rat” and a “double rat” (from hour of birth) which shows a slightly less agressive/quieter personality, but sometimes racked with inner conflicts (I often wish I could be more outgoing, particularly in groups.., and do not really consider myself domineering!)
Curiously enough there are indeed two main types of rat found in nature, rattus rattus which is rather like a big mouse, always “giving it the large one” but does not thrive in cold weather (it is the black rat more commonly found in warmer countries) and rattus norvegicus, the brown rat found in the UK which is quieter and more paranoid!
