    Most people who use wikipedia use it for legitimate purposes and contribute to it within guidelines;

    unfortunately it looks like its been hacked today and a highly “inappropriate” image put onto the front page – looks like the aftermath of a surgical operation, and may well have previously also been used on SJ. (although I would stress that I do not think anyone from a party messageboard is responsible!)

    I guess the idea of putting this picture there is an attempt to devalue the site and get it indexed by web filters so people canot use it.. sadly this occurs sometimes; look behind the scenes you will see their “open” society is under constant attack, people even pay for Denial Of Service attacks against wikipedia servers and set up sites to attack the concept 😡

    they will no doubt revert the page back but probably worth being careful if you’re in the office!

    i’ve never used much of the wiki stuff… contributed to a wiki travel site some time ago…

    i don’t understand why they would be a target for abuse or hackers? from what I gathered it was a place to post your own accounts of an experience to share with whoever… hardly an ethical issue

    what’s it all about GL?

    The concept of a wiki is a webspace which everyone can edit – once you have set one up it can be used for all manner of stuff from disseminating articles to two-way discussions. On a wiki there are admins just like on here, but the articles are linked but aren’t threaded so its more suited IMO for larger articles, essays, “how-to” guides etc particularly amongst a collaborative community. The “everyone has edit rights” philosophy means its easy to make an addition or a correction, OTOH there is an audit trail kept and previous versions so a bad edit can be reverted back to a good one.

    Wikipedia is a big encyclopaedia about everything. naturally there are differences of opinion, but there are very strict rules about keeping a “neutral point of view”.

    IMO it gets targeted for abuse just like anything else connected with “communities”, “open source”, “hippies”, “collaboration”, “PLUR” in an increasingly sociopathic world. Some people just cannot accept any form of co-operative enterprise, and seem to take whatever action they can to destroy it, usually they are people who are unhappy in their lives and just wish to spread that unhappiness. Its rather like an angry person kicking a small dog in the street, and about as cowardly.

    i see what you’re saying

    i have to admit i did once kick a small dog in the street 😮

    i had broken my foot and was trying to get to the hospital in montpellier, France. i had no cash for a taxi (ambulance is private and the city is pedestrianised so i had no car) so i had to walk to the tram stop. i had a broom as a crutch.

    an elderly french lady had a lap dog off it’s leash and it ran up yapping at me and it bit my only decent foot

    so i hoofed it right up the bum

    it was cowardly, but i was unhappy… so that proves your point 😉

    they reverted it; but I think there’s a vulnerability in how the main page pics got replaced which means that this incident could happen again 🙁 – that’s all i’ll say in a public forum as I don’t want to give people ideas!

    no doubt the wiki admins will sort this problem out, but it means you have to be wary now using the site which shouldn’t be the case…

    mind you I’d class that particular dog incident as self-defence TBH – its not cricket for old ladies to let their dogs chew on injured people either! was thinking more of a sad and lonely victor meldrew type kicking next doors puppy just because it wandered into this garden….
