  • Channel 4 is to show live footage of the effects of Class A drugs in one of the most controversial shows in its history.

It is testing the theories of former drugs tsar Professor David Nutt, who was sacked by the last government after claiming that LSD and ecstasy were less harmful than alcohol.

Volunteers will be shown taking different drugs – likely to include Class A substances such as heroin, ecstasy, cocaine and LSD.

The series will also show the reaction of participants to drugs with a lower classification – which could include cannabis – as well as alcohol.

The drugs will be taken in a clinical setting at a research laboratory and so it will not be illegal. Channel 4 says it will look at the different physical and psychological effects they cause

This is just going to be embarrassing for all concerned.

TBH in this day and age I agree with extraslim – whilst the research is all legal and above board and its good its being done, there is plenty of in depth research already available online.

Documentaries like this existed in the 1990s and 2000s, and were similarly berated by the Daily Fail and Mediawatch (the successors to Mary Whitehouse).

The wider issue isn’t so much that there isn’t now open and honest debate over drugs, but positions are increasingly entrenched. Prohibitionists talk up non existent dangers – pro drug people gloss over the bad news about how most long term drug users don’t actually die or get ill but can become more impulsive and self centred, and neglect other life responsibilities whilst chasing after hedonism.

    sounds good to me

unfortunately after 20 years of this and another economic depression the rest of society (who make the rules) is a lot more cynical – I think the nation is still divided between tolerance and greater clampdowns and though a lot of progressive gains were made in the good times of the 1990s (particularly before the millenium when the economy was booming) the balance has shifted very slightly against tolerance the last 10 years.

When I first started getting involved with this site nearly 10 years ago, there was a party every week, pills were nearly as good as legal (cops didn’t even bother the dealers) and we could put whole partylines and even rough regions of where raves were happening up on here. We could mention rig names, DJ’s, crews, put up photos and TVP didn’t do shit even though most of us then lived in the TVP area…

the way to get stuff decriminalised is for people to be discreet about it and hold down normal jobs and contribute more widely to society, like how many party folk do in other European nations..

as embarrassing and pointless as it may be, i don’t see why it’s so controversial. people can easily get access to videos of executions and other disgusting stuff on the net but.. wait.. someone taking drugs on television for the sake of “science”? OMG, THAT’S UNACCEPTABLE! COVER YOUR EYES.

It isn’t even that controversial by todays standards – just that the Daily Fail are still as bitter as they were 25 years ago that people dare to buck the system and push the limits of free expression (even whilst remaining legal)…

oh, daily mail. says it all really.

Could turn out to be a good drug education video for school kids perhaps?

I’m hoping it will show a more open minded view towards drugs and their effects on humans, and could help get rid of some of the negative old school myths about drugs like LSD and ecstasy, that most of mine and other generations were told at school.

Saying that, it still wouldnt suprise me if they broadcast the show in such a way that even if some of the volunteers have a banging time on drugs they will look bad. I guess we will have to wait and see, I believe it is being shown later this year.

    what a joker

I reckon this will be interesting. I dont wanna see people shotting heroin and crack. Ill be more interested in viewers reactions and the other drugs they’re going to test.

I just wanna hear some voluenteer on acid tell everyone this actually is fucking epic shit.:laugh_at:
