  • Hello, I am working on a documentary about the free/squat party scene in London. I am in bad need of some contacts and a way to talk to a few crews – the film is being done by an American company with a interesting director for a US music web tv station: fuze.tv. It will be a very small film crew shooting hand held, running on the hoof with the whatever happens in front of the camera. They want to see what the scene is really like and the more full on the better! We will hide and protect identities to ensure there are no come backs.

Any ideas for promoters / organisers / DJs / ways in?

If it is easier than typing, give me a time that works, a number and I will give you a ring,

Many thanks for any ideas or contacts!

    Alex

    hes a fuckin jurno.

you talk to a jurno your a grass in my opinion.

    Lol!

fair play mate i’d love it if something like this could happen, but at the moment it just cant!
there’s no way way you could follow round a crew on the missions they go on/places they go without revealing their identity!

film like this would be good as it would show all the good things that go on within the scene…… but i dunno if you’ll find anyone willing!

if you did even the most basic bit of research and read a few threads on this forum you would know that noone is going nowhere doing nothing, fast

never trust a jurno, theyd make some slanted bullshit story like they done to us in the 90s then take loads of kudos n cash off the media world.

theyd get druged up young cranks to say slanted leading shit that droped crews in the shit, teyed get busted while young tarquin went home to mummy n daddy saying how he fell in with a bad croud…

Its been tried many a time before, not just the “anti drugs” hatchet jobs, also often supportive films made by ravers and if it had had any sort of positive effect we’d have tolerated/licensed venues in every part of Europe by now.

in fact until the mid 90s a lot of the less mainstream visual media was fairly supportive of electronic dance music culture, at least until the backlash caused by the overuse of drugs.

When I was round at Mudstompers this weekend we were looking at some 90s videos of various rave tracks and most of them had been taken off stuff like MTV etc..what struck me was how many there were in those days and some had fairly big budgets.

and whilst of course right wing media will be hostile at the outset but even the more liberal companies are funded by US backers who just will not take the risk of being associated with a culture that champions the use of illegal drugs, especially if/when advertisers withdraw their funding. its not just us progressive types who can do stuff like activism and product boycotts and make companies change their policies.

and the harsh reality is only people who support what you are doing anyway who see the positive side in it.

think of how many ethnic media outlets there are, and yet how racism still persists and how divided this country has become.

just been lookin throiugh an old copy of mixmag from years ago when a local guy involved in the free party scene spoke to a journalist and provided some photos and info about local free party crews, result was a multi page ‘free party special’ complete with free cut out dog on a piece of string. avoiding any sort of media interest has to be the best thing…..

Thanks for all the comments; positive (sort of) and negative –

the film is being made for http://www.fuse.tv, ( I mispelt it before)a US based web tv channel.

They specialize in alternative music – it is not aimed at a Daily Mail right wing, (let’s shock old ladies about the state of the youth of today) bourgeoise audience – it is aimed at young americans 16-25 who could do with seeing how the free scene works.

The idea is a very positive film about UK dance counter culture, it will be part of a round-the-world series. They are US so they cannot show excessive drug use, people having a bad time etc, it ain’t the BBC undercover- and Donald Macintyre, it sure ain’t.

They want to see the Brits are doing something positive, non commercial, non main stream and fuck it yes illegal – so what. Even if you know a promoter on the edge – who do licensed and a few free parties on the side, I could do with a hint.

As they say on party political broadcasts – thank for your time, enjoy life

the only thing I can suggest is try and befriend one of the promoters in the London area who advertise legal events here – and even then they will be wary.

also, take a proper look at this site and the recent events in the East of England (and some other regions). Don’t just skim it looking for a quick solution.

This scene had 20 years to prove itself and unfortunately the unlicensed side of it has gone fully tits up in recent years due to it being a victim of its own success, including ravers own use of their video footage on social networks, youtube etc.

Gangs have taken over the London free party scene, your camera crew would be at personal risk (they could get a lot of crack for a decent DV25/50 or digibeta, the porn crews would buy it).

Times have changed. the good times have gone, and they aren’t going to come back. As far as free parties go you’ve missed the boat, its been sunk in a sea of ketamine. You may however still find a fair bit of interesting alternative music if you look around here.

    furry muff –
    cheers for the advice

To be honest GL i don’t personally think you attend enough free partys at the moment to make a comment like that! Fair play what you see now may not be what you would like it to be (as do I).

But the good times have not gone, I go out pretty much every weekend as do hundreds and hundreds of others.

The scene has died in some ways but is growing in many others.

    Party on we shall!

Good old positivity eh GL 😉

Yeah I dont get all this negativity either – theres still loads of psytrance parties going on in london, indoors and outdoors…dont know much about tekno but the last tribe of munt in london was pretty good. 3 weeks ago my crew did our 4th party, our first in a forest and had a great time. No offence, but people need to learn not to confuse their own jaded attitudes with the state of the scene as a whole.

curiousape – i might be interested, PM me.
