TBH finding out about MDMA was one of the few useful things I learned at uni although I only lasted 2 years there mostly because I never wanted to study that particular course in the first place and some of the things I wanted to learn about weren’t yet officially invented; nor was the Internet released to public use (it was that long ago, 1990-1992!)

The profs really didn’t appreciate someone caning what was apparently most of the bandwidth for all the Unis in London to link to Germany and Switzerland to get on the web server (there was only one!) to obtain and share harm reduction info; had it not been for the Germans deliberately leaving the connections open (everywhere else was firewalled) I would have got arrested for computer misuse/theft of resources.

times are different now – it does seem most people appear to be studying courses they have more interest in (if not then it is pointless being there)

I can understand if they might want to concentrate more on getting the degree – although unfortunately it seems today that if the subject is anything fun/creative they are likely to end up not being able to get a paying job in that field and have to take a shitty job in some call centre (where they might as well just do drugs anyway).

At my work two lads work for me who are both graduates of some IT-course; and neither of them have got taught anything useful there like basic coding or how to keep networks running well

One big flaw in the article is the young woman is unlikely to take the entire gram of MDMA in one weekend anyway; if she did she might end up helping teach students at the local NHS teaching hospital (which is why licensed raves often occur in uni areas near teaching hospitals).

It could last her a month or more if usage were spaced across a longer period and she has the self discipline. And TBH booze and even chocolates have become bloody expensive recently and 9 + big makes would most likely make her quite ill, more so than drugs. Motor cars are also a money pit and even more dangerous than drugs; they klll far more young folk here than drugs ever do

I’ve also recently had to help rescue a community radio station because two young well educated lads who AFAIK never took drugs burned out and decided to suddently withdraw all the goodwill/resources they had put in to the project.

Its probably unwise to get high every weekend or start selling drugs in halls as that gets you nicked; but moderate amounts of party drugs might not be so bad.

Some others like stims taken discreetly in the right set and setting could even improve performance in certain subjects (particularly maths, programming and learning languages) whether or not you are at uni…

also if she’s regularly drinking but also mentions concerns over the cost of buying petrol (gasoline) for a small motor car; unless she only socialises in centre of the city and there is very good public transport sooner or later she can be tempted into DUI and that is far more dangerous to herself and anyone else on the road.

my late Professor friend also knew another science prof from Cambridge who had a reputation in the 1970s for being eccentric. This prof was also a registered medical doctor although he taught other sciences especially those which involved doing particularly complex maths; and got some notoriety in the media because he had allegedly “spiked the students drink with dexamfetamine”.

he also had the unusual practice of calling students for supervisions (tutorials) at 03:00 or other similarly random hours – when I discussed this with my mate we both agreed that none of the students actually got “spiked”;
the drink was voluntarily consumed at these tutorials as it wouldnt’ be unreasonable to want an energy booster.

It was a way of making the most of a supply which was starting to be more closely monitored/rationed; plus powdered amfetamine tastes bloody awful if not washed down with plenty of liquid :laugh_at:

This was the same era that Britain invented loads of clever stuff with computers/electronics etc and still had a thriving manufacturing industry….
