its a big urban myth that cops go to all the trouble of making fake posts to messageboards, although they will obviously closely monitor public forums to see if they can glean any useful info.
sometimes they use official police internet gateways – sometimes home ISP accounts.
this site has been around nearly 8 years, on one occasion a cop even registered and posted here to try and discourage a crew from putting on an event in a certain area.
it was as obvious as a bunch of people talking about a rave in a public park, and a bobby in full uniform walking past and saying “don’t you realise that is illegal?” ….
“deep cover” infiltration attempts may be good scripts for TV and movies; but are rather more problematic to carry out in real life.
There is a risk of legal challenge as it could be accused of being “entrapment”, plus continually keeping up the pretence of being someone else is a difficult thing to do which takes up a lot of time and resources at detective level. its a lot of effort just to get a partyline which can be obtained from many other sources anyway.
I’ve never come across any “secure” partyline mailing list which works on nominations etc, most of them anyone off the street could sign up to unchallenged – and even if these lists were not used all it would take is to nick a raver and check their phone (or even a phone recovered from a rave site some mooser has dropped and an honest dog-walker decided to hand in!)
