Took this line from another thread (sorry GL)
Should we trust them ?
How safe are PM’s ?
I know it’s a subject there have been talked a lot about in other threads..
But I wanted to make a tread just about that,it would be easier to find instead of a few posts in a lot of different threads..
People write PM’s to eachother about illegal parties on PV,and as PV is a well known forum there must be someone checking this site..
They don’t have to check the PM’s on everybody here,it’s very easy to find out who is writing about them..
They often say it in a thread “I’ll PM you when I find something” ect ect ect.
A lot of people can get in trouble because of these PM’s if they aren’t safe..
But I don’t think that anybody here would hurt anybody on purpose,so it’s a question that should be answered,to teach people to think about before they write, not only in threads but in PM’s too..
Our private message server is fairly safe. None of the mods can read your messages, some admins maybe could but we respect everyones privacy.
Remember – no unencrypted computer network is 100% secure or private..
To preserve your security
There is only really one big security risk to most users in Western countries and that would be if you are arrested for a “physical” crime (such as drug use/dealing) and cops seize your computer equipment; they get scientists to check all the data on there and can therefore find out your user ID and password for message boards.
If one of your friends gets nicked and this happens, then there is a slight chance that cops have read your private messages to them
if you are worried, then if you exchange a mobile number with someone you trust it makes it harder for authorities to follow the traffic as they then need a warrant with the mobile company as well as an ISP.
But TBH 95% of you need not worry. If you are just a raver or even part of a sound crew and are not involved in wider criminality (such as drug deals or any kind of “blags/scams” to fund your lifestyle) the cops do not have the time or resources to monitor your net traffic.
And lets not forget that all UK electronic transmissions go through a single point which allows all such transmissions to be scanned for keywords
[used to be called bletchley park – nowadays they claim that it no longer exists but still all routing goes through the one IP address so I dont believe them :groucho:]
Thats GCHQ these days, and they don’t deny that it exists, much like MI5 etc, they just don’t tell us shit about it.
Bletchley park was the place in WW2 where they cracked the german enimga code, and built the worlds first electronic PC etc among other things.
And as for everything being routed through one IP address, thats not entirely correct either I am afraid. Although the authoritys have alot of monitoring capabilitys at ISP’s, Internet exchanges, etc , everything is not routed through one point in and out of the country, in fact it comes in and out over many 1000’s of different links. Although alot of traffic will go through major internet exchanges like Linx there is no one single point of entry/exit. Even if we did route all traffic through one point, which I belive some countrys do, the shear amount of traffic they deal with would be very hard to process effectively.
We have a system in place called echelon which will check a fair % of plain txt comms in and out of the Uk for keywords, over a certain number flagging you up as dodgy.

As for PM’s on this site, Site admins will have access if they want, as will anyone who has administrative rights on the webserver this site is hosted on. I would trust a PM to be as safe as a txt msg, if not more so. Everything apart from ( and including) face to face communications has a assoiated risk of interception. Its just what your comforatable with really I guess…
Anyways I’ve just ranted a little there, I am sure alot of that is BS but I haven’t got time to check through it. Sorry, hope I made some sense…
