when i was livin in southville, bristol i was about half a mile from the football stadium, and when bryan adams came to town, i could hear him clearly in my front room till gone midnight! it seemed ridiculous to me that it was legal, when our aint!
ps: i would prolly be up for doing the short film, but i have no tech (cameras broke, pigs have some tech) bah, glaballoons made me feel like a fraud. i’m off to have a spliff.
you answered yourself in that post “gone midnight” its all about finish times…
Society tolerates a bit of din until 23:00 onwards and then all noise and celebrations are supposed to wind down – they would have had to pay loads in PEL costs just to get those extra hours…
its also accepted (by some at least) if you live near a stadium there may be noise (in the same way that as I live near a duck pond ducks may eat your plants) but the times are limited. Bristol city don’t have all night footy matches for this reason, in fact often expensive stadiums and spaces goes unused a lot of the time because of peoples tendency to whinge..
we’ve got a big stadium here and they need to pay loads for PEL for each event, even though I would have thought they already had the license…
if Bryan Adams had kept going all night the event could be shut down. and the venues PEL revoked [OTOH I would have dialed 999 myself if that was going on outside my room!]
Following complaints from locals, the Reading festival and Womad have (rightly IMO in the case of Reading) had their times on how long they can play music in the night reduced and stewards patrol both areas to ensure no unauthorised music equipment is deployed after hours (even large ghetto blasters and the like)
the BBC will give you a hand held for two weeks…
all you need to do is give me a theme (to give to them) or idea for a film diary of how doing this you love, for free has impacted on your life
and as i said before, if you don’t like the final cut, you get the say so on whether or not it gets broadcast
I’d suggest going for the BASS meetings rather than Ganja Day
Bass is 100% good spin and obviously positive stuff
but cannabis is still a contentious issue
the declassification actually caused a liberal backlash as a lot of teens thought is was OK to blaze skunk all day, their liberal parents didn’t mind at first and some clearly have suffered problems (even if its just demotivation lunching out college or spending too much money on pot rather than schizophrenia or violence) – also the recent incident where a heavy pot smoker carved up his 14 year old girlfriend in Scotland (was widely reported by Auntie and a special feature on their website) won’t help
I saw the grauniad reports slowly shift in angle from pro-decrim to “not quite sure” since 2002 (or whenever the law changed)
but I can’t see a single negative thing BASS does – they are reducing the risk to lots of people involved in urban music events. (I also reckon Auntie would rather show BASS as it fits in with their attempts to be trendy but isn’t too controversial)
if you are gonna play the media spin games you need to at least know their rules and play tactically
well i got a meeting on tues, i was gonna duck out as i start a new job on monday, but it looks like thats not an option…
the only thing that could go wrong is that bass are very wary of the media, and have been patiently building themselves up over a number of years. since i only recently joined, there might be some feeling that i dont have the knowledge to adequately explain bass, or that media exposure would be a bad thing. if anyone has any ideas as to how to counter these concerns, id be happy to hear…
..i’m well looking forward to bringing this one up. :egg:
its difficult as I understand where BASS is coming from..
having been involved heavily with the media industry myself as an engineer, I know well how dysfunctional it really is – OTOH the resources can be used for good
Its as if I were a gunsmith – guns can be used to oppress and shoot people – but they could also be used to feed people (if you eat meat or were in a survival situation) or merely for sport without killing anything (target shooting)
what I will say though is as BASS become more effective – and particularly if they are receving any kind of support or funding from a publically funded body, the media will find out about them and their activities – the effort some journos put in to find out stuff about people and organisations is beyond what many detectives put in to solve crimes (and often beyond the rules the cops are supposed to comply with when it comes to covert surveillances)
if it is a hostile person it could be “public cash used to promote drug filled events”
but if BASS went on one of these programmes that could also spark a backlash anyway
as you have said on many occasions you are prepared to “put your head on the block” it may be better as an individual to show your support for these kind of free events, whilst not affiliating yourself to any particular group
but even then you could be seen to be “speaking for everyone” and others would not like that (you could even get personal hostility from other ravers, as obviously your face would be on the box and people would know who you are!)
but then again other ravers have gone on reality TV (Soaps from SJ being a good example on “Bricking IT” – tbh they made the poor girl look like an idiot and she was shown up as having let the team down by going out partying 🙁 )
and showing ravers/travellers etc on video diaries is hardly a new thing, it has been done serveral times in the last 14 years its up to you (after consultation with anyone else who would be affected by publicity) whether you do it or not…
one of the main problems, as you pointed out, is that if i put my head on the block, not everyone is going to see it as altruistic..a lot of people would say i was doing it to feed my ego (which is prolly true) and there would be a chorus of “why him?”… ive only been raving 7 years and puttin on parties for four, there are plenty of way better qualified people than me to “represent the scene”..obviously the key then is just for me to qualify everything i say by stating that they are my own ideas, not other peoples, but then it would potentially be irrelevent and easy to tear apart, or worse, i would get accused of appropriating others ideas for my own ends. fuck knows. either way, if i do this, then everyone and his dog is gonna have a pop. but i guess that just comes with the territory, youve just got to do the best you can and hope for the best…
..depends what BASS say.
in this cas they are looking for someone under 25 anyway…
but as i said before, if you don’t want to do, no worries, just an offer
but as i said before, if you don’t want to do, no worries, just an offer
if BASS do want to do it the simple solution is for someone more experienced to help USE put together his video diary
then you have a “young” spokesperson putting the correct messages across rathe than an “ageing hippy” – yes I know this is ageist especially as I’m in my 30s (although I could probably pass myself off as the same age as USE) but thats how the media work.
it would also show the media by his young age that people are still doing this sort of stuff (many thought the scene died in the mid 90s post CJA) and this scene is not going to go away whatever middle england might think (even the cops realise this scene isn’t going to go away!)
but there’s still the personal risk of the backlash… its the decision of BASS and USE between themselves ultimately
yea, ihope i made it well clearto BASS that i would be presenting the other members of bass rather than speaking for them. and sometimes a bit of naiivety or ignorance is a good quality in a presenter, as they ask questions, rather than assuming everyone already knows what the do..
