  • Mendlesham is a small village about 6 miles outside Stowmarket…

doesn’t appear to be a lot to do there… not sure about N20 being “potentially lethal”, although its a shame people don’t pick up the used canisters, why litter up the village? (apparently they can be weighed in if you get enough of them…)

AN alarming trend of youths in a Suffolk village using potentially lethal nitrous oxide to “get high” has been uncovered, The Evening star can reveal.

New and used cartridges of the substance, commonly known as laughing gas, have been found in Mendlesham and the parish council has sent out letters to residents to flag up the issue.

It is understood the cartridges, which can be used to make whipped cream, are being sold to youngsters from the back of a vehicle.

Youths use the gas cartridges to inflate balloons before inhaling the substance through the mouth.

Nitrous oxide can induce euphoria and mild hallucinations when inhaled but has a number of associated health risks.

These can include nausea, eye disorders and blood cell damage and in extreme circumstances death.

A number of fatalities from asphyxia as a result of inhalation have been recorded, predominantly when some sort of bag is used to assist the inhalation process.

The letter sent to residents by Mendlesham Parish Council stated that police have been made aware of the situation and are looking into it.

Nitrous oxide can be sold legally if the seller has a special licence but there is no offence of possession of the gas.

The substance is also known as hippy crack, cartridges, whippets and nos.

    Fast facts: Nitrous oxide

n>Nitrous oxide is a colourless, slightly sweet-smelling gas with a short-acting disorienting effect.

n>The gas is most commonly used as an anaesthetic in dentistry and a propellant in the food industry (e.g. in whipping cream).

n>Nitrous oxide can be breathed through a mask, cone, or more commonly, a balloon.

n>Inhaling nitrous oxide directly from the canister can cause frostbite of the nose, lips and vocal chords.

I don’t know about the dangers (if there is any apart from falling over and whacking your head) but “extreme cases” and “a number of” are very vague. The statistic could be just 1 death.

I think most of the problems are associated with inhaling it pure.

unless N2O is administered with at least 20 percent oxygen, hypoxia (decreased oxygen content of the blood) can happen. In order to achieve high enough concentrations of nitrous oxide to get a good recreational effect, concentrations of 50 percent or greater must be inhaled. If such concentrations are mixed with room air, inhaled oxygen concentrations drop to low levels and the hypoxia may result in irreversible brain damage.

Breathing it directly from pressurized tanks is dangerous for two reasons.

First, gas flowing from such tanks is very cold — cold enough to cause frostbite of noses, lips and (most serious) vocal cords. Being anesthetized, a user may be unaware of such injuries until too late.

Second, because nitrous oxide does not support life, it should be mixed with oxygen if it is to be breathed for more than a few minutes. At private parties, oxygen tanks are rarely supplied, and people have died of asphyxiation by breathing straight nitrous oxide through face masks. One way to avoid these dangers is to fill balloons from tanks and breathe from the balloons.

Also serious injuries have happened to people standing in front of open windows when inhaling, rather than sitting comfortably. Loss of motor function.
just common sense though, safe as long as not over used.

Thanks for that, Babylon. Good info. raaa

what the fuck are the media on about, anyone remember a few years ago when there was loads of press about people selling nos in clubs as an alternative to class a’s and it was a good safe drug

now people hae started leaving the cans left about everywhere its a new empidemic sweeping the nation with huge risks and it must be stopped now

there’s pretty much no danger from it other than falling over, the aussies go hard in on nos espically the kids its a really big thing when your 14/15 (like poppers over here)

although i do remember hearing of some aussies get one of the giant nos cannisters and crack it open an let the whole thing out into their car, they all died so it is deadly in extreem cases

I saw a bit about this in the more liberal papers but at a local level you only get this attitude when the communities are more liberal

TBH I think there are different attitudes in the local press of the counties of Eastern England (been monitoring it for ages, even before I moved here)

Cambs and Norfolk press are a slightly more indulgent towards youth culture/club culture

Suffolk and Essex are harsher, as are Beds and Herts.

I reckon it may be because there are more middle class/altenative types in Norfolk and Cambs (a mixture of hippies and brainy types from the unis) who tolerate drug use more amongst their peers and their offspring

But in Suffolk, Essex, Beds and Herts there is more tradtional/conservative thought and less tolerance. This could be a backlash though as these counties were very popular rave/club areas in the 90s and the communities are feeling the effect more when people overdid drugs (increase in crime, violence and lost productibity)

and all our upper middle classes in cambs an norfolk are coke heads

Has anyone tried NTX yet, I bought some the other week and had it for the first time at a party and thought it was all right actually, its active ingredient is Griffonia extract which is a source of 5-HTP which is turned into serotonin in the brain.
