This is apparently the first UK death from this stuff – a bit of an odd one though as I would have thought someone involved in clubland would have more experience of N20 use and most places that sell the gas have bare warnings about not doing stuff like this…
could be an accident, could be a suicide…. IME a lot of clubbers/drug users can be quite impulsive particularly on comedowns and suicidal feelings are not uncommon midweek…
Either way shows that people need to be careful with this stuff…

By Ross Mccarthy, Birmingham Mail
THE managing director of a ticket sales company died after sniffing laughing gas in what may have been an experiment that went wrong, an inquest heard.
Daniel Watts, aged 23, was discovered at is home in Edwards Road, Erdington, on September 8 last year near to a large cylinder of nitrous oxide, which is also inhaled by club-bers for its euphoric effect.
Birmingham Deputy Coroner Christopher Ball said it was the first case he had come across of someone dying in such circumstances.
He said the evidence indicated that Mr Watts had had the canister delivered four days previously after ordering it through the internet.
“It may have been an experiment that went wrong,” he said. “It may have been the first time he had tried it. After the initial euphoria too much of the gas would anaesthetise him and asphyxia would ensue.”
He said it was possible that Mr Watts had tried the gas before, using a balloon at a nightclub.
Although Mr Watts was having financial problems in his business, there was no indication that anyone was putting any pressure on him to pay any debts and, while what he did involved a degree of “premeditated thought,” it did not necessarily mean he intended to kill himself.
A friend, Paul McNeil, said Mr Watts business involved designing flyers to help advertise night clubs.
He said after Mr Watts failed to respond to calls, he forced his way into his home and found him lying on the living room floor where there was also a large plastic bag, a pillow and a pipe leading to a 5ft tall cylinder under the stairs.
Pathologist Dr Gerald Langman said Mr Watts had died from asphyxia due to inhalation of nitrous oxide.
Mr Ball, who described the case as “perplexing”, recorded a narrative verdict saying: “Daniel Watts died from the effects of inhaling nitrous oxide, although there was no cogent evidence that he intended to take his own life. On balance he had not intended the eventual outcome.”
WON’T BE LONG NOW TILL THE OLD LAUGHING GAS IS CLASSIFIED AS AN ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE.BOOHOO
nah, like ketamine its too useful in legitimate medicine for this to happen.
What has happened (and several reliable sources I spoke to at last weekends party confirmed this) is that the NHS has been told to beef up security of canisters as things are blatantly going missing from hospitals, dentists etc…
its already Medicines Act restricted, but I don’t think it would be given a higher classification as this would put a massive extra burden of admin costs on the NHS and other medical facilities as they would have to do lots of extra paperwork to comply with the security rules…
Ironically I’ve only ever done it once or twice and it just doesn’t appeal to me all that much (well I might do it occasionally but I don’t understand why people seem almost psychologically addicted to the stuff (its like feeding time at the zoo when someone brings out a canister)
Just a point of interest General Lighting suggests that nitrous like ketamine is too useful to be made illegal. This misunderstands the way legality applies to drugs. Heroin is legal for certain people at certain times, ie prescribing doctors, pharmacists and patients it is a class A drug to the reat of us. Ketamine (was) POM prescription only medicine. It has been reclassified as class C nitrous oxide is legal and will remain so but the medical heath regulatory authority MHRA has it on a restricted schedule which means it is illegal to sell for the purposes of inhalation (?!). gov.org can do what it likes with whatever substances it chooses. us mere mortals must quake and obey however. The woggle that was found with a plastic bag over his head attached to a nitrous canister is a prime candidate for the darwin awards but was killed by stupidity not nitrous. CO2 or helium would of had the same effect, he died of asphyxiation (lack of oxygen to the brain) not nitrous toxicity.
most five year olds know not to put plastic bags over their heads…
And so do most NOZ heads. lol thats just common sense.
Noz heads take note : The brain cant take being starved of oxygen for any longer than 2-3 minutes!
Thats just silly what was this experiment going to achieve?
It’s like doing it straight from the canister!
Hay all.
Just wanted to have a go with laughing gas and found this thread.
Will I need a dispenser?
I was at Reading festival last year and some guys were walking round filling up balloons. I take it if I buy some canisters and a dispenser, all I do is fill the dispenser with the gas and fill a balloon with it then?
All tips and tricks very much appreciated!
What’s your opinion about Laughing Gas..
Was not something we could buy when I was younger , so I can’t have an opinion about it,I have never tried it myself..
Is it really that dangerous? :hopeless:
The youngsters then inhaled the gas before sharing it with their friends.
The balloons of nitrous oxide, or ‘hippie crack’, were on sale at Brighton’s Ocean Rooms for £2 a time – but it is becoming widely available throughout the country.
Clubbers experience a rapid but short-lived high. It is popular because it is perceived to be a safe party drug, and possessing and inhaling it is legal.
But the medicines watchdog, the MHRA (The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency), has warned that regular use of the gas can cause lasting health damage. And it vowed to prosecute anyone selling the drug for inhalation.
The gas is an anaesthetic commonly used by dental patients and women in labour.

like it says small doses are fine…. every now and then its pretty cool to have 1-2 balloons especially whilst your up on ecstacy feels amazing. I think its a little bit dodge… repeatedly breathing in the same air from a balloon til you run out of oxegen doesn’t sound like a good way to wrecked to me.
Lol, they’re not even pretending things are good any more.
There were good when they first came out but now they;ve either gone really weak or my tolerance has gone up. I dont really do them that much anymore but good to have a couple when your scatty in the morning!
