I lived in West Berkshire in the early 1980s, and remember the Greenham Common peace women, who squatted the (now decommissioned) airbase for pretty much all of the cold war.
As this lasted >12 years, the women claimed the adverse posession law and got hold of the title to land!
Not to be outdone, MOD launched a civil courts counterclaim – claiming for the costs of policing their protest to the public purse.
They won– and using their intelligence gathered on the protesters had the family homes belonging to some of the “ringleaders” confiscated and the proceeds of sale claimed by the Government – the Courts ruled that this was OK as their kids were grown-up (ISTR most of these ladies were middle aged or elderly by the 1990s!) and the peace women could use the piece of greenham common land as their home, or sell it on the property market (I believe it is now a monument of some sort to their campaign).
