  • (I wrote and told TVLicensing that there was no longer any receiving equipment in use at this address. After about six weeks, they wrote and asked for an explanation. I replied by enclosing my original letter. They then wrote to me again saying that they would send someone around to check (the officialese version of shouting “Liar, liar, pants on fire!”), to which I replied that they were wasting their time, that whoever they sent wouldn’t be allowed in, and this would be followed by another letter from me withdrawing their implied right of access. I’ve heard nothing since.)Instead of de-tuning all channels though could he not of just de-tuned channels 1&2 as that is what the license fee is for…
    Fair play though!

the license fee is for the whole lot, its the right to receive the television signals.

its not that well known outside the TV industry (particularly engineering) but BBC and ITV despite being “rivals” have always all shared resources (albeit sometimes grudgingly) even before the boom in privatisation/freelance/independent production, then in the 80s they were encouraged more than ever to work together

Due to this today lots of BBC channels transmit out of old old ITV network facilities – many commercial channels transmit from BBC Television centre.

BT and arqiva (which once was also a public sector organisation called the IBA and was part of NTL for a bit) link the whole lot all together and a lot of brainy people shared their knowledge to make the radio and telly work

Sometimes it was done on commercial contract but sometimes it was an informal basis with even commercial rivals helping each other for free, as the “public money” was paying for this “unprofitable slack time”

Its difficult to explain further without going into heavy technical or business detail and it did seem a bit more justified to the private citizen when more of these were public sector companies (until the 1980s/1990s) – even though ITV was private there was a nationalised company running all their transmitter masts for many years.

The market and privatisation took over eventually but even until the late 90s there was some sort of shared “public service broadcasting” ethos even with commercial broadcasters.

The extreme ruthless competition Thatcho, Murdoch and co championed finished off this goodwill and cameraderie though..

@ GL do you have any info or news links to the shady advertising, for crisps, lager, fags (which is illegal on any t.v channels!) etc that goes on, on bbc channels?

not offhand but its more a grey area as its been tolerated since the 1980s because thatcho thought it “introduced a free market ethos to broadcasting” – it was mentioned in the Grauniad a while back (probably Media Guardian)

The technique is called “product placement” – Ofcom is aware of it and has expressed concern at various production companies but has been told that “without it the programmes wouldn’t be made” as the revenue from doing so is costed as part of the production budget and this has been going on for years.

Bear in mind a telly programme these days isn’t often made by staff with full time jobs but by a small production company which has one or two high paid staff/star talent (usually the directors) but the rest of it is done on a shoestring and with loads of penny pinching

if you find out anything let us know if you can. its just the advertising of fags, which i thought was now highly illegal after the ban and the F1 ban etc… Ill have a look on google too now i know what its called.cheers.

bloody hell theres quite a lot of info out there actuallyhttp://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=product+placement+in+eastenders&meta=

I think it may be classed as “naughty” but not highly illegal – if Ofcom step in to hard they will be accused of being “nanny state” and “censoring content” as they are implying you can’t have characters that smoke…

then again foreign countries clamp down a lot harder, which is why in films they invent fake brands of cigarettes to show on screen – I still suspect the tobacco companies have some involvement

in the days (long ago) when I was interested in making films/video I remember some Americans saying how that some tobacco companies would give you money towards struggling film makers production budget and all the free cancer sticks the actors, crew and admin staff could smoke if you showed people smoking in your movie.

I like watching the odd thing.. especially documenteries and stuff.

    Animal Planet <33 =D

Cartoons and kiddy stuff are also good ^_^

Tv is lame. Its purpose is no longer to entertain people, instead it is to sell things to people.

I have a tv, but the only reason I use it is to play music.
    <–no cd player.

could never get tid of my tv, for 1 its not mine and 2 there was some proper shit last night that i needed to watch because i couldnt sleep
