The Northern European countries had the sense to not destroy a great deal of their manufacturing industries and where required use the power of Government to keep work at home, and to drum into the heads of their citizens that you must pay a fair taxation rate for fair public services (and also make sure that such services are delivered efficiently). they also implemented proportional representation which forces even opposing political parties to work towards a consenus for the common good, whilst keeping their overall views and policies.

They did this in the 20th Century whilst we were chasing after short term profit, and it has paid off now. Although they too are affected by the economic depression the impact is less than in the UK and Southern Europe.

Also Thatcho (albeit begrudgingly) invested loads in the Police and surveillance to interfere in the lives of people who dared to dissent against anything other than profit making, especially if they took drugs at the same time. When some party people set up camps in the West of England they were stalked and followed and eventually broken with force, untill somewhat ironically all that was left was the hard drugs trade, and even when the young conservatives(!) briefly latched on to the acid house party scene they were all disowned by their party and some grassed up and sent to prison.

I think it was paying off even in the 20th century. West Germany’s recovery post-war was remarkable considering they had been completely decimated during the War.

It is rather ironic that during those times, Germans were quite fond of British engineering, and indeed, the good engineering and manufacturing of planes like the Spitfire are some of the reasons why Britain was able to survive the Luftwaffe’s onslaught in 1940-41. This tradition remains somewhat alive in motorsport, such as Formula 1 teams like McLaren and Red Bull but economically it is nowhere to be seen. I think this gets reflected during times of economic depression because the shift to Britain’s economy being so focused on the financial sector and non-tangibles trading in London has lead to the situation the country now faces where problems in other countries’ economies leave disproportionately large holes here.

It is also worth noting that this financial shift has also led to a rather huge lack of graduate students or workers who are versed in STEM fields. People with decent software development skills or knowledge in trades like electrical engineering can get jobs fairly easily even in the current climate (I know several software developers who haven’t spent more than a day out of work, and keep getting offers from other companies) but a lot of people who would perhaps otherwise go into those jobs (which can be very well renumerated) chase the big money in the I-banking or stock trading sectors.

In Germany on the other hand (where education is practically free, even at the University level) there is a good emphasis on trade schools and alternative routes to employment. They also have a very strong culture of family owned small businesses, some of which export a huge volume of product and make 2bn euro a year. Their strong automotive and electronics industry. A lot of what they do is build components for larger systems (which is what companies like Beckhoff do) and it has worked wonders for them.

For obvious cultural and geographic reasons this exists to a lesser extent in East Anglia by the North Sea (a lot of DE and NL firms invest here) but young people here still actively avoid the engineering jobs as they think its too “boring/nerdy” and chase after nonexistent paid work in fashion design and arts/music (boys as well as girls!). There are people of my dads generation being brought out of retirement to keep essential stuff like the telecommunications networks going as there are so few young people who know about even the basics of things like analogue and digital telecoms and particularly radio communications..

in any case if Britain has reached the stage where folk are celebrating the death of a democratically elected politician (and in some cases I don’t blame them for doing so!) on the international scale that isn’t a great deal to be proud about, especially when we keep bleating to foreigners about “how civilised British people are etc…” That said I did laugh at the comment from some Northern miner type who said “Thatcher has been in Hell for barely a few hours, and already she is trying to close the furnaces down… “

Ow man, did you get a load of the 6 pages or more specials in the papers today. Although I did see a copy of the metro on the bus where someone hard drawn a swastika on Maggies forehead and given her vampire teeth. I wonder who did that……… he he

Sad news for some though – Hell is to be privatised and Hitler and Stalin have been demoted.

I’m in a state of euphoric shock – it’s like a dark shadow has been lifted from my life. 🙂

Demonic trade unions have been smashed. =(

I’ve not seen this post yet,

“In keeping with the great lady’s legacy, Margaret Thatcher’s state funeral should be funded and managed by the private sector to offer the best value and choice for end users and other stakeholders. The undersigned believe that the legacy of the former PM deserves nothing less and that offering this unique opportunity is an ideal way to cut government expense and further prove the merits of liberalised economics Baroness Thatcher spearheaded.”

I don’t think she wanted a state funeral anyway. The Beeb and some other news source reported that her funeral will not be a state one.

    good good

There’s the issue of the procession being pelted with rotten vegetables and other rubbish, for one thing. Doesn’t make the State look good.

Interesting to note that Nelson Mandela outlived her.

    Nelson FTW

I saw this video where these people changed a sign outside a cinema to something about her too. This vid slightly covers it

    Mmmm….

I recon you’d actually get many more staff nurses ( the main lot who work on wards at band 5) as the wages quoted are for an experienced charge nurse ( generally one per shift managing the ward band 6 and 7 (not ward manager))

    But interesting still

Margaret Thatcher's funeral: 23 things you could pay for with £10m

In 97′ she said that single mothers should be put into religious institutes to teach them morals.

    what the actual fuck.
