BBC News – Man guilty of burning poppies at Armistice Day protest
What do we all think then? Personally I think that fine is too fucking soft and shows what a soft touch our justice system has become. Burning the poppies is probably one of the most despicable acts one can do, Totally out of order considering the sacrifices our war dead have given.
I also think had the roles been reversed and a white man burnt a copy of the Koran he would be facing some very serious charges, possibly even jail time. Also what’s 50 quid these days, that ain’t no punishment. It sends out a message that it’s okay to defile one of our national symbols and nothing will happen to you.
Not happy with this at all. :head_bang
I wasn’t expecting a fine at all. Although burning a poppy is arguably ‘out of order’ it is not illegal according to inciting hatred laws.
Burning a copy of the Koran would count as inciting religious hatred. However the poppy is not a religious symbol, our armed forces are multicultural so this protest was entirely political.
It’s a bit of a tricky one, inciting hatred laws are controversial as it is and we need to make sure they are not used for ‘anything that offends anyone’, they should be about discrimination of specific groups. I think they’re knob heads for doing it at this time, but in my opinion what they did still falls under free speech.
incidentally we have it better here than in the US

Oh god, don’t get me started on those tossers. If I saw them picketing at one of my soldier friends funerals then after what I would do would land me some serious jail time. They are probably worse than the MAC twats over here.
This is why I detest religious extremism. doesn’t matter what religion is it they are all degenerate bastards!
Did you see that Louis theroux thing where he spent some time with those Westboro Church nutbars? Crazy mate!!!

Yeah they are a personal pet ‘hate’ (although I don’t like to use that word), apart from homophobia raising my hackles I dont like anyone who thinks their religious morals should be enshrined in law and forced on anyone else. America is especially bad for that (oral sex and vibrators are still illegal in some states!). These guys also piss me off because they give spirituality a bad name. New age hippies can easily get lumped in with dogmatic evangelists because of this sort of behaviour.
I didn’t see that Louis theroux thing, I’ll check it out
I have been watching the wesboro baprist church VS annonymous thing with much interest though!

Oh yeah, Quality! I wonder how long this campaign will go on for? :weee:
Dont know how I feel about this, freedom of speach is important but then if all they were trying to do was cause hurt to other people then that seems like a line not to be crossed. A fine seems sensible to me if there must be some kind of punishment.
Indeed it’s a complex issue.. where people draw the line and where the law should draw the line is something that will always be subjective.. In this case their fine was for public disturbance (ie getting under the police’s feet and being uncooperateive) not for the content of their protest or any intentions to cause hurt.

Just watched that.. proper makes the blood boil.. getting kids to hold up banners that they don’t even know the meaning of, then one of the kids gets hit by someone in a passing car.
What do I think?

I think burning a poppy is not despicable, killing, torturing or raping someone is despicable. Obviously it is what this act might signify that is a cause for anger, but the meaning of a symbolic act will differ between different people and the people who did it. I don’t really know much about the context of the story, but (maybe naively) I might imagine there was more of a point behind it than saying fuck you to a load of dead soldiers.

Possibly, but if that was the case it could be a completely different context and your potential reaction to that shouldn’t influence your judgement of this story.
I don’t think it’s right to deliberately offend dead people who sacrificed lives for an honourable cause and a nation of their ancestors, but I wouldn’t overreact and seek strong punishment for a symbolic act (at least it wasn’t in the form of violence) I would question why did they feel the need to do it?
The penalties seem in line with other similar penalties handed down in these circumstances – consider the amount of White British folk what seem to use a war memorial as a urinal and also get off comparatively lightly, also these memorials are routinely vandalised by stupid little chavvy kids..
BTW some white kids (admittedly young teenagers) did burn a Koran recently and only got given words of advice/reprimand.
its very difficult to put someone in jug for a non-violent act – and consider the worst case could have been the nutters of both Muslims and extreme right turning the remembrance ceremony into a fight (you have to give credit to cops who stopped this!)
Personally I would even support the Police if they decided to forbid any sort of extremist protesting during remembrance ceremonies, whilst permittinng them at any other times.
I feel that is basic morals that even if your worst enemy is killed you do not have the right to disrupt their funeral/remembrance ceremony to make a political point.

I consider is to be very despicable, I have lost family members through WW2 from both sides of my family, Wish I could of met them, they would be the family elders right now but they gave their lives so we could be free from oppression and tyranny and I thank them for that huge sacrifice as I thank others who gave the same. This poppy burning is a massive insult to their honour, A massive insult. It is a British symbol and is probably as important to me and others as a Bible or Koran are to the religious.
The authorities had the chance to come down hard on these fuckers and show it is not acceptable but no, Now that they (MAC) know nothing bad will happen to them they’ll carry on offending our nation whenever they get a chance and as a result only groups like the EDL will benefit.
It’s already happening now, If you look around more and more people are taking note of what is happening. Facebook pages are popping up and thousands of people are joining up. This shit will get worse, believe me. The justice system should of nipped this in the bud but instead have made things ten times worse.
Mark my words, this shit WILL get worse. :crazy_diz
(also not having a go at you, Just wanted to have a rant!)
