Hi,
I am planning on putting on some free parties this summer in the wiltshire, berkshire area. However i want your opininons on a couple of matters that are concerning me.
1) Sound system: I have a gemini active system which consists of two 100 watt sattelite speakers and a 200 watt sub combined with 2 omnitronic 500 watt 15 inch speakers with a 1000 watt amp. Will this be adequate sound for a small venue?, these may seem stupid questions but i am not in the know at the moment and im trying to gather as much info as possible!
2) Music types: i am a trance dj first but i also play hard house old skool harcore, hardcore and a bit of drum and bass, is it good to have multiple music styles played on the night rather than just sticking to one.
3) Venues, my first partie is giong to be at a royal legion, (okay this probably seems lame but it is my first party, it’s cheap to hire out and i want to give people a taster and also for me to gain some experience). Obviously living in wilts i have endless venues in the wonderful countryside and i am going to try and sweet talk some farmers into letting me use some land.(fat chance i know, but it’s worth a try!!).
4)Dj’s: My biggest concern is djing quality. i am not paul oakenfold or tiesto but by the same token im not a bad dj. My question is, do people going to free parties expect top notch dj’s and mixing skills or will they settle for a decent amateur dj who is pretty good
Thanks for reading and all replies are EXTREMELY helpful.
Keep the whole dance music scene alive, stay safe and i hope you have a very bangin 2004!!
hello mate,
we play a different range of music at ours, from dnb to hard house, breaks to old skool harcore, it works well, just depends on what the party people are into,
as for sound systems, im not that clued up, but weve got a 2k rigg,
ok indoors for a smallish venue, but out side its not all that, deffinatly need 18″ drivers for the bass, thats what were lookin to get in the next couple of months, hopefully two each side, i would say the amp would be ok that ya goona youse,
im sure there will be some one on here that can tell ya beter than me.
as for djs, you will always find people to play, an dont worry about if ya good enougth or not, get playin, the crowd will love it, but not as much as you, its a wicked feelin.
hope it all goes well, an good luck,
Ed.D, Cause n Effect crew

FUCK!
I just done a huuuge reply to your questions and it logged me out when I posted and hence the message above appeared.
I will do a shorter version.
1) The rig you have will be ok in a small room for about 100 people. Make sure you elevate mid and treble above peoples heads or it will get lost after the first 3 people. It will not produce heavy gut wrenching bass but if its clear and punchy then people will dance to it. No doubt after you get a regualr crowd you will start getting more gear. We started with 1.5k and 20-50 people. Now we have 20k… trust me you will get hooked!
2) Play what you are into. You will become known for your rigs style and you will get the right people. If you wanna play 1 style all night do that. If you want to play a mixture then thats fine too. Don’t fall into a trap of playing what people try and make you play.
3) Bear in mind you will need more equipment to do outdoor parties.
4) If you can string a half decent mix together then the majority wont care whos playing. They just want to vibe off the tunes coming out of the rig. Obviously there will be a small percentage who will always be listening to every mix in detail and evaluating it, but like I said, most people just want the tunes to dance to. And like Ed.d said there will be loads of good dj’s willing to play for you when you get going.
Good luck to you mate!
Thanks a lot everyone for your information. It all helps a lot. My first night will be coming up in the next few months and when summer rolls around i will be having a lot more. So thanks again and good luck to you all.

Hi suzie thanks for the reply. Firstly i think this is a great idea and sounds like a wicked place. However there is one hurdle which i have to jump first. My whole speaker system has been badly damaged in a van accident on the way to a freinds house to give it a sound check the yesterday evening. The amp is completely screwed and two of the 500 watt speakers are badly damaged. so a bit of a setback unfortunatly. (i now need to work a lot more to pay for repairs to the kit!!). However i would be interested in this offer, i just need time to get my kit back together. In the meantime if you find someone else to do it and you want a trance dj i would be happy to come along. I am available in april and all months until september. Thanks again and ill keep you posted on when i get my kit back together

There are a few people I know already putting on free parties in Wilts, why not hook up with them for one or two to learn some ideas and experience, another rig is usually welcome if you communicate well in advance, more hands to help with the work.
Also don’t forget how important promotion is for putting on indoor gigs, i’ve seen so many parties go down the pan, because people assumed word of mouth was enough, you’ve gotta work hard at press releases, flyers posters etc etc, and its all part of the fun.
I went to some wicked free parties in Wiltshire in 2002, one evn had portaloo’s!
sorry to herar about your speakers dan..im new here but have a friend who coulkd possibly do a really good deal for you on sound equiptment, hes a really nice guy anmd i know he is dismantling a couple of his rigs so its worth a call..his number is 01525718363 ask for chris hes a really nice bloke just tell him rachael gave you his number and he should be able to sort you out ( he knows his sounds)
hope this was of some help…take it easy

Its definitely worth hooking up with the local Thames Valley and Wiltshire crews before starting out. Not only will you be able to pool resources, they have the local knowledge which should hopefully make finding venues easier. Sadly following recent events where outdoor parties have led to serious damage to farmers crops there is a potential for a harsher clampdown on free parties – even more important that we should work together.

I assume (and hope!) you are thinking of licensed indoor parties when you talk about flyers, posters and press-releases! I’ve never known a free party go down the pan due 2 lack of people in my area – but going 4 commercial style promotion of unlicensed events attracts unwanted attention from the local council officers and the old bill.
Hello there gevneter. Welcome to Partyvibe.
Do you have an email address for Chris. Just interested in what he might have up for grabs.
If not i’ll give him a ring. If thats ok with you?
he can be contacted by phone or via his website…http://www.longlights.com
