I think the problem with ravers is they haven’t exactly got the moral high ground these days, and some can be proven to be involved in other crimes such as vehicle theft/burglary. the cops pick up on this because their filming and surveillance makes it easier for them to identify and judge who is who at raves.
OTOH I bet that if the cops had steamed in to something like todays climate change protests or sizewell protest with the same level of force used against raves (I appreciate there are scuffles still but these protests do actually seem to be tolerated a bit more!) there would still be at least a local if not national outcry, even from people who aren’t exactly eco-warriors.
the bigger problem is ravers are increasingly seen as mere hedonists who put little else back into society, and when given a bit of freedom or tolerance have abused it. The nature of the crowds at raves has changed, its increasingly a male-dominated crowd with a lot of simmering anger and resentment and less “loved-up” feelings. Worse, there seem to be a lot of people around with mental problems/personality disorders exacerbated by the use of some drugs (particularly ketamine) and who started off as party drug users on the rave scene.
we have after all had 20 years to sort some of the problems out and they are still not being addressed. so why shouldn’t the rest of society (and I don’t just mean the old bill!) want to see illegal raves stopped?
Incidentally I think PC Ketamine and Sargeant Smack, as well as Detective Chief Inspector Rig Politics are doing a far better job of slowly destroying alternative culture than any riot squad could ever do.
