I have gone and done this arse about face, I want to partition my C:/ drive but I seem to be having issues. I dont want to loose my data on there (just windows and a few bits). Is there a way of doing this??

what you trying to do i don’t understand? …. you wan’t to lose windows but not your info?

What I have done is reinstalled windows on my pc onto my C:/ drive, i forgot to partition it before I reinstalled Windows. I want to have 2 partitions so i can also run Linux Mint.

I have a second hard drive in my PC but that has all my music, videos, photos etc. I don’t really want to mess with that hard drive as it has a fair few gig of stuff on there, i like to know that stuff is safe as when i lost it all last time it took fooking ages to replace it all again

You can do it via Partition Magic- Haven’t used that program in a while- hope the newer versions are not messed up as it’s run by a different company now.

Before partitioning a system drive make sure you defragment it before.

well you can make partitions after you install windows … i can’t remeber exactly how .. but i think you have to go into the bios or one of the menus b4 windows loads when you turn your comp on ….

Yeah I tried using that as I downloaded it, problem is it wont let me partition it as the drive is in use (obviously) Running out of ideas now 😥

Yep but i think that method will cause me to loose my data :crazy_diz

burn your shit on to dvd … or put it all onto one hard disk then partition the other one .. then put it back onto that one ..?

Got about 300gb of videos and music so it would be a mission to move it to DVD’s. Gonna have another think in the morning, I have consumed too much wine to fiddle now

you’re saying you already have all your important data on a seperate hard drive?

TBH if I were doing this I’d first physically remove this data drive from the PC and put it away somewhere safe.

That way if you get confused with the partions and which drives they relate to (especially with a mixture of Windows drive letters and dev/foo type specifiers for Linux hard drives which I also find confusing!) you can’t accidentally trash all the valuable data.

Then make your dual boot system drive. I think you have to initially put the Linux partion on first though!

When you are done, put the second data drive back in the PC.

With most modern Linux distros it makes no difference that it was a Windows drive, the Linux OS will mount it and you will be able to read/write data (works for me with Ubuntu anyway)

it only takes a few hours to reinstall an OS, but the other data is irreplaceable!

take out the data drive.
The c: drive needs to be redone as it will be quicker than messing about.
xp install odes have a prtitioner, set 1 up for windows and then you need 1 for linux ( at least 10gig) and a 1.5gig partition for linux swap. xp will format the partition you gave it and ignore the others
When windows is installed chuck in the linux disk and install. when partitioner comes up select ‘mannual’ . you can then set the partition you created as root and linux will format. You will also ne3ed to set the swaop partition which will also be formatted by linux.
Doing it this way ( xp 1st) means that when linux is installed it will also installthe ‘grub’ loader which will find your xp instalation and show it as an option on boot up
