whether we like it or not, the increasing clampdown on free parties and the need for crews to obtain funds to keep their rigs going is forcing events back into licensed venues…
if we want to rave these venues need to keep their licenses so the business risk to those involved in funding them and keeping them open is not unacceptable…
many people have become so used to having regular free parties they forget they are in a licensed venue, and the rules are different.
There has to be security as part of license conditions (often these security are deliberately selected from organisations unconnected to the venue owner) and any “questionable” activities cannot be carried out in full public view.
The Police (both uniform and detective ranks) can, and do, visit completely unannounced and inspect any area of the venue they wish, and can ask people for ID to prove their ages or to identify potential criminals or trouble makers. It is called a “licensing check” and is an integral part of the licensing process.
Venues which play any kind of urban music (including rave genres) are subjected to particular scrutiny with regards to drug use and violence / firearms-realated crime; this is a Government guideline for which we can thank the UK Garage “scene” as much as Tony Blair.
A current tactic in TVP area is to “persuade” licensed venue owners to allow sniffer dogs on the premises. Those who accept are praised by the cops, those who refuse are noted and treated as suspect venues and subject to further monitoring.
So if a venue is being a bit “lax” on its security, don’t expect it to always be that way, and don’t brag about what you can get away with on open parts of messageboards – or even in other venues where cops, anti-rave types or even the landlord (who can get brownie points from the cops and reduce competition by grassing up another venue) may be listening…
Save that sort of talk for round your friends houses or at free parties.
if the licensed venues disappear, thats the funding source for a lot of raves gone – anti-rave types would love to see this (and it has already happened in some areas), don’t give them the satisfaction!
oh and another thing – if you are driving (or even cycling) there be careful where you park your car, or where you lock up your bike! the local scum in many areas prey on licensed rave venues and their punters…. car break ins/thefts are common
(many of the scum are ex-ravers who fucked themselves up through drugs and thus have a prejudice against those who are still enjoying themselves, they also feel ravers are less likely to report thefts to cops particularly if people may have left incriminating items in the car)
be careful who you chat to in the vicinity of venues if there are underpasses / dark alleys as muggings also occur
Speaking as a free party goer who has been putting events on in licenced venues for the last 3 years or more, I have to say that it’s very good to see some advice of this nature on a free party site – its integral to the cause of underground dance music to keep the underground clubs going as much as it is the free parties – both scenes feed off each other – and we are seeing far, far too many of the shadier clubs closing and being replaced by more profitable (and less risky) commercial venues which is leaving a distinct lack of underground venues in many of our major cities – in particular the scene’s in Leeds (except the Windian) and Manchester (as well as my home town of Huddersfield) are suffering because of this lack of small underground clubs.
The smoking ban is gonna exacerbate this even further!!!
well hate to say it, but this a reason i have nothing to do as a promoter with *free* partys.
I only do legal venues but try to keep it as free party style as much as i can
its a right shame, as when i starte djing and promoting i was well into the free partys but its bloody hard to do it these days with Landowners risk losing there grants, and the human race turning into a load of wankers TBH.
I miss the old days of the free party but must admit i went to Paronoia at the weekend in norfolk which was the bloody nuts!
who is telling them that?
on the new Single Payment Scheme farm subsidies, provided the event does not cause environmental damage the land managers are allowed to have 21 days of events where the land is used non-agricultural use without any risk to their entitlements…
TBH a lot of the problem is the NFU stirring up farmers and making them paranoid that ravers will burn their farm down or drown in the slurry pits etc and Farmer Giles will get sued…
I reckon a well-run outdoor event could still happen with permission and without causing anyone disruption or problems.
im a NLC holder and in essex i was on the case of running a *free* party and i got turned down flat through the courts due to the track being to small for the fire bods getting there. but fair play but anyway….
Up the road i decided to speak to a farmer giles and asked bout bungin him a wee bundle to use his land to host a party and he said that he would but he will lose his fundin from the mighty Guv!
So TBH i never bothered getting back on the case again as i asked around bout this and a couple of people said the same thing but i never got much Confirmed details back
