an example of how a convoy can be spotted by late night cop patrols – straight from Bedfordshire’s press office,..
POLICE disrupted the second illegal rave of the year in Mid Bedfordshire this weekend – thanks to quick thinking officers on late night patrols. At around 1am on Saturday officers reported seeing a convoy of around 30 vehicles heading towards Old Warden and it quickly became clear scores of other cars were heading towards the area.
Police, conscious Bank Holiday weekends are always a favourite for raves, began searching for the proposed site and within 30 minutes had found a sound system set up in Great Wood near Old Warden.
Police immediately sealed off the site and turned motorists away, while other officers spoke to organisers who said they were planning to be there all weekend.
They were warned they would be served notice under Section 63 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 and left when they realised it meant their sound systems would be seized.
Deputy Divisional Commander, Supt Andy Martin, praised his officers, saying their prompt response prevented a weekend of noise and misery for nearby residents. It also meant young people were not exposed to the dangers of an illegal and unlicensed event.
He said: “Once these raves are established they are notoriously difficult to stop and I am delighted my officers managed to gain control before we had hundreds of people turning up on site.
“As the summer months approach we would continue to appeal for anyone with information about raves to contact us, since with prior intelligence we can put sufficient resources in place to stop them.”
Anyone with information about raves should contact *********, at ******** Police Station, on ***** or ********
^^^ sorry ossifer, the rave community may well help you catch the real criminals and encourage the runaways to return but you’ll have to do your own work to stop the parties…
to be fair, if you have a partyline, you dont need a convoy, so maybe the above article is more pro-partyline than you thought.
if we are small and closeknit, we are easy for the government to destroy. if we are numerous and diverse, then they will have a lot of trouble on their hands. i think doing massive parties which include more randoms is essential for the future of the rave.
some people still form convoys though so they don’t get lost, many can’t be arsed to read maps and in that particular area there is a tradition of convoys because of Exodus.
if the government really wanted to destroy the rave scene they could have already done so 5 or 6 years ago as their technology improved whilst the core of the scene was being weakened by the greater use of addictive class A’s, internal politics and dysfunctional behaviour.
I often wonder if these events are grugingly accepted (by cops and govt if not locals) in some areas because they (as yet) cause less trouble than townie venues!
its not as difficult as you may think for new entrants to find out about raves, particularly with boards like this.
most younger people find out about free parties through their college friends, or at record shops or discussions round friends houses.
Its a big myth this scene is “secret”. There has been 15 years of media coverage, and even wikipedia has an entry on free parties.
Medium size (3 rigs + chillout) parties, spread across the UK are as difficult to stop as massive ones; bear in mind even at those there are more ravers than cops!
A large event like a teknival is also fairly easy to stop now with cops having better comms and CCTV everywhere, the moment the large amount of vehicles hit any city or village someones calling the old bill even if they haven’t noticed – middle England operates on a permanent level of paranoia against “pikeys”.
And there’s danger within – I’ve been to the big early 90s raves (including Castlemorton) which people look upon with rose-tinted specs and although they looked fun they were a logistical and publicity nightmare. There were shitloads of rip-offs and robberies, violence (including rapes, gangs rinsing through a dance floor etc).
Look at Frenchtek where it took just one dysfunctional crew to wreck what was otherwise a really good party – unfortunately when you bring large groups together, particularly where there is a male-dominated group and a somewhat terittorial mentality amongst communities, there is always the real danger of violence.
Until we can evolve beyond that large parties are always more risky.
What happened at FrencTek? not a mad n bad crew of catapillers was it??
one French crew who had a reputation for criminal and dysfunctional behaviour wrongly accused the UK rigs of theft (in fact another French raver had done so) – and attacked the crew with various weapons.
The gendarmes present did nothing to prevent this (hardly surprising as they are conscripted from the local youth and as the racial element had been introduced to the argument would naturally take their nations side).
NB: This is not intended as a Francophobic statement. This could have happened in any country with any large, diverse collection of people.
Yeah, what was that all about? Never did quite work out if there was any truth to it or not.
caterpillars? they are definitely true, one of my friends ended up in the care of the French emergency services because of the fuckers 🙁
he’s still recovering now…. (current condition not life threatening but he was too ill to party last weekend, and he’s a young chap who’s always usually up for it..)
small and word of mouth, makes things more personal and safe
