Pete Doherty: Now I’m clean I want to help other addicts – Comment – Voices – The Independent
this paragraph:
“I was into psychedelic music from the Sixties, and Iād go to these underground clubs. There were loads of drugs around: weed, speed, LSD, but in the back of my mind there was always heroin. Long before I came across it, heroin was there. Except in these early years it wasn’t called heroin; I called it opium.”
I found interesting. It’s weird for a kid of the age pre-16 and maybe well before IDK, seeing heroin as opium. I suppose if you were young but read books on opiums discovery and uses, you might well end up fascinated with the stuff.
most everyone who gets on the gear on america nowadays started with pills but i did no a cohort of kids who all jumped into brown at age ~16 and AFAIK they didn’t start with pills so they probably see or saw H as opium. idk libertines were a great band at one point
I imagine if he’d been reading about opium as a youngster, he probably read about many of the opium derived compounds that have been extracted from it, the fact that one derivative is demonized while they all share the same properties more or less might seem quite strange and might well have been something that I would think as an early teen. IDK though.
they are all more similar than they are different that is for sure.
Yeah, that’s what I was getting at.
totally … opiates are opiates
Exactly, I got put on methadone from very heavy codeine use and I’m not sure the scale goes down any/much further from that.
