IMO other than when referring to chronic opiate abuse, the term “addict” is a vague term anyway and cannot be strictly defined unless the person making the judgement is a medical professional.
Even the professionals often do not agree on the exact definitions of addiction.
It should be replaced by the term “problematic drug users”, and I think this term can be applied to the use of all drugs, “hard” and “soft”.
I think any drug use is OK until it adversely affects the user or anyone else in society because of the users activities (such as crime/anti-social behaviour). At that point the user should cut down their use and/or seek appropriate treatment.
A lot of party drugs users do (maybe without realising) cause as much problems to themselves and others as so-called “addicts”…
