they were called Mandrax or something similar (street name was mandies) but contraindicated (stopped from prescription) about 30+ years ago. Similar to barbiturates there is little demand for stuff like this in the modern era due to the risk of fatal OD (as it also attracts attention of feds much quicker)

as for the South African Dr Wouters I can see why he didn’t actually get nicked ( in early 1990s all the MDMA and other stuff got handed out to various local and foreign dealers) and was forgiven by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; as even if the control of this most likely stayed in the hands of middle class whites; what do you think could happen if they all suddenly had ample supply of MDMA in a country heavily influenced by the Netherlands?

Unfortunately the long term fallout from the secret project (intended as a distraction technique to keep the old régime in place) affects ZA today; as although the country and the ANC is progressive by African democracy standards sadly in a similar manner to the (previous?) attitudes of some Asian countries they still advocate drug prohibition out of fear of the past.

From 1984, Nelson Mandela was still in jail then. He was let out on 1990-02-02 (around the same time Dr Wouters decided to sell off drugs stockpiles!)
