I don’t think any of the real big brother stuff is actually covert any more, the authorities make it clear that we are being monitored and scrutinised.
It is also a bit naive TBH to expect to be just left to get away with using the telecommunications networks for activities that others in society (not just politicians either!) consider to be criminal, such as drug dealing and mass trespass on land/property costing thousands or even millions of pounds/euros.
If people on the net once seemed “above the law” that was because a few years ago the authorities hadn’t caught up with technology. Now they have – it was bound to happen.
However the net and communication systems are only a security risk if used incorrectly. We just need to be aware of the risks and be sensible what we say, especially in public forums/social networks.
