Danish police arrests hundreds
Protesters set up blazing barricades in central Copenhagen
Police in Denmark have arrested some 300 demonstrators in the capital, after a protest against the closure of a youth centre turned violent.
About 1,000 protesters in Copenhagen threw cobblestones, bottles and fireworks and erected barricades.
Police used teargas to try to break up the protests, comparing the scene on the streets to that of a “war zone”.
The protesters are angry about orders for young squatters to leave a building occupied since 1982.
Local government sold the centre in 2000 and tension has been building since the sale.
“It was extremely violent,” police spokesman Flemming Steen Munch said.
“It’s been many years since we last had to use tear gas on the streets.”
On Thursday, the group had held a peaceful demonstration to try to convince the city council to stop the eviction of the building’s occupants.
Left-wing activists have been using the centre as a base for more than two decades.
Danish newspaper Jyllandsposten reported that one demonstrator was unconscious and that two police officers had been taken to hospital.
Read that one of the demonstrators got his fingers blown of by the bombs they were throwing after the police
This is really bad – dark days indeed – but at least the fight is for something worth fighting for, even if it can only ever fail against the machine of the state – at least it shows people are still prepared to take a stand for what they believe in, which is an all too rare thing these days imo.
Thank you, GL and angel for helping out with spreading the news…I have been posting on http://www.network23.org.uk Of all 273 arrested are only 3 still inside behind bars, 1 italian man, 1 portoguese and 1 dane…Foreign demonstrators are now escorted to the border but will be let back in again if they try to travel to CPH….The person with the hand injury refuse to speak to the police…keep up the good work!

International Communiqué from Ungdomshuset
While an eviction attempt seems closer than ever an international communiqué is now spreading through the world.
Dear friends from near and far. WE’RE STILL HERE!
We stay strong and in high spirits despite the pressures of our current situation. The political negotiations have broken down since the city council has refused to accept our demands and we have refused their sorry offer.
The last six months have been an endless manifestation of strength, and the level of activity in and around the house has never been as high as now. This is thanks to the massive local and international support we have received.
Our hearts are warmed by the news of solidarity actions in Denmark, Russia, Lithuania, Poland, Japan, Australia, Canada, USA, Germany, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Ireland, Great Britain, Spain, Norway, Finland and Holland among many others.
We send out a huge thanks for all the actions taken by so many.YOU are the reason why Ungdomshuset still exists as an active autonomous freespace.
Facing few ways out, the eviction now seems nearer than ever. Therefore we call all of our friends to act now and when Ungdomshuset is evicted. We encourage you to come to Copenhagen or act in solidarity in your own community.
Make plans. Get ready.
There will be activity in the city during and after an eviction and practicalities like sleeping facilities for international supporters have been taken care of.
Ungdomshuset stands for us as an arrowhead example of the states war on counterculture and alternative spaces. This is why we choose to set an example in our defense of the house.
Keep up the resistance! Ungdomshuset stays!

0700 this morning the eviction of ungdomshuset started…the pigs came with special troops and attacked by helicopter and landed the troops on the roof! I will try to stay at home as long as possible, and will try to update here: http://www.network23.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21
Heard that the police are using their anti terror corps..
75 have been arrested,3 person are very hard injured..
The whole area have been closed down..
People are not sure if the police will start to tear the house down now :hopeless:
this is a bit like what happened in the late 1990s, when a long term squatted building in Brixton, South London was evicted – again cops used helicopters, TSG (“riot squad”) and armed police units
Unlike many other nations it is uncommon for British police to carry pistols or carbines unless the situation is very extreme (such as terrorism or gang warfare) – but when it comes to the crunch, squatting is often viewed as both of these :hopeless:
