its not surprising when people are motivated merely by money – they produce a “cash cow” project like a kids programme (the revenue comes through toys and merchandising) or a bubblegum pop record.
What matters in this case is sales and revenue, creativity takes a back seat.
At lot of people I know are very talented; but often find they have to take a “proper” job as they don’t want to sell out by producing the crap the managers make them do (which is tried and tested stuff without too many risks, guaranteed to provide a reasonable ROI to the shareholders).
Stars who are too feisty are broken in a number of ways (the pop idols stuff is fairly mild TBH, far more ominous is the use of hard drugs to break the spirit of signed artists and make them more dependent…) the mainstream music commercial industry is way fucked up and something best avoided. Its pretty much self-destructing anyway; which doesn’t bother me one bit though – even if there is no top 40 people and no commercial charts/record companies people will always love music, and our computers make it so easy to share a good tune nowadays…
